Job during nursing school?

Hey fellas,

So I am planning to start a BSN nursing program this Fall in Aug and have been wondering if it is a wise decision to continue working as student worker at school (offers no work exp towards nursing, [campus safety] but, flexible work schedule) or pursue a job as an EMT (just passed NREMT)? Ideally i'd like to work in a hospital asap and gain any kind of work exp leading towards nursing but I also want to have a managable load w/o potentially sacrificing my GPA.

Hello!

If your first year of the BSN are pre-reqs... I'd go for the EMT job now. If you are going straight into core nursing classes, I'd hold off and keep my college job... BUT that's me.

Remember, if you go straight into core nursing classes, you will be learning new concepts at the same time learning a new job (EMT). Neither one is easy, but if you have the brain to handle both, then go for the EMT job regardless... as you want the experience now rather than later. That experience will definitely help you get an RN job.

Yeah, I definitely want the exp and hope to make the best of my first semester in nursing school as I know it will ONLY get more difficult as the programs progresses. Thanks for the response.

my advice: work as little as possible, get experience relative to what you are learning at that particular moment by offering to shadow at a hospital.

I tried working a full time job, and it was a miracle that I kept my 4.0, and then only because I basically gave up my life and studied every free minute. I am not working this semester, best choice for me.
