Japanese RN to US RN licence?

Hello,

I am not a nurse, but my wife is. She is Japanese and I am American. I am trying to help her convert her Japanese RN licence to a US licence. We have no idea where to begin, which is why I am posting this thread. What tests are required for her to pass in order for her to qualify to be a nurse in the US? Can anyone post up some links to websites with this information?

Thanks for your help

Hi and welcome to the site

Check out the sticky Primer to working in the USA should give you all the info she needs. Do you know what state you will be living in as she will need to apply and follow guidelines for Foreign trained nurse with that state BON. Eventually once she has met all requirements she will get the OK to sit and pass NCLEX to work as a RN in the USA. With you being American it will may the process of actually moving to the US a little better than most nurses at the moment as we are stuck in retrogression and currently no visas available for us but the process for RN is the same for every foreign trained nurse

Thanks for the reply Silverdragon102

We are planning on moving to Hawaii next year, but within 3-5 years after that we will be relocating to New York City. In the next 12 months I am working on getting her a green card. We are starting the application process this month. vbmenu_register("postmenu_2127423", true);

Welcome to Allnurses.com...................

Hawaii requires the CES to be done by CGFNS in order for them to even look at her application. And NY will require the CVS be done to endorse to there.

Licensing requirements are different for each state, and are not related to the immigration process. The English exams are not required for her at this time since she will be getting a visa thru you, but most facilities are going to wish to see that her English skills are quite functional before they will hire her. It may be a better idea to focus on her English skills, especially speaking, before starting anything else. Patients' lives depend on it.

Thanks for the welcome and information. My wife is pretty proficient in english. There are still a few minor things she needs to learn, but she is coming along very well. I read through your sticky post and it is a great help.

Thanks
