iv's

Published

Is there anywhere a nurse can go to volunteer to become more proficient in starting peripheral IV's? I would like to really advance my skills to go on and do something more iv related however i'm looking for places outside of the hospital that would be willing to let a nurse volunteer and practice....All advice is appreciated.

Are you starting IVs where you work and having a hard time with them? Join the club ?.

Have you searched on Allnuerses for tips on improving IV skills? There are literally 100's of tips. I found YouTube videos to be a big help.

I don't know by of any volunteer positions.

Where do you work? Does it have an outpatient lab or inpatient phlebotomy service that you can work with for a few hours? If you have a nurse educator, s/he is the one to ask about this. Otherwise, there are often willing coworkers who don't mind being a guinea pig.

When I was a new grad I wanted more experience. I talked to my manager and we used an education day and I was sent to the ED and put them in for all the nurses.

Agree! My hospital has a 'PIV Basics' class available to nurses throughout the system. After the classroom portion, participants are sent to shadow/volunteer in infusion services; they aren't allowed to leave until they successfully place 3 PIVs. If you can figure out a place that would let you (like ED or infusion), maybe your manager would let you tag along to practice some skills.
