I am nervous about IVs also, but I want to do them. I have been a phlebotomist for many years prior to this, but, to me, there is a difference between drawing something out and then, placing something in to stay. But, I will make myself, because it does slow the process down to wait for someone else to begin one for you. I felt the same way when I started drawing blood, and I became very good, so, I have to feel the same about this. Good luck!

Lots of schools don't teach IVs. (There's another thread about that somewhere.)

Starting IVs isn't hard, but it does take some practice. I wish there were mannequins that felt like real people, but haven't seen one.

I watched another LPN insert one just today and it has given me the confidence to start doing them myself.

IV's are basic nursing skills. As nurses , we do many things that present much more risk to the pt than IV's.Yes, bad things can happen with IV"s but, usually, "a thumb falling off the next day" is not included in these risks. As nurses we hear all kinds of stories, people saying, "hope you do better than the last nurse, she left a bruise". So what, or , Don't you blow my vein, etc, blahhh blahh blahhh, .Sometimes I wish people would get a clue. It's like, going to a auto mechanic and telling them, I hope you don't leave a mark on that muffler when you put the new one on. By-the-way, what do you do ?
