IV dosing question

Order: Synthroid 0.1 mg IV daily

Supply: Sythroid 200 mcg per mL in a 10 mL vialHow many milliliters will be given for one dose

I keep coming up with 0.5mL.

I take 0.1mg and divide it by 0.2mg and multiply it 1mL.

I'm problably leaving out a big step by ignoring the 10mL

Should I multibly the 0.2mg by 10 and multiply the 1mL by 10 to get the same answer 0.5

This was already graded and given back to me as the only wrong question:(

Yes, you are. Have you tried the formula desired/have x volume? Once you fill that in, you should see where the 10mL fits in.

Carefully read your question again. Does it say that you are supplied "Synthroid 200 mcg per mL" as you have above or does it say you have a 10 mL vial containing 200 mcg in that vial? I think that is where your mistake lies.

I suspect you are calculating 200 mcg per mL and what is supplied is 200 mcg per 10 mL.

If it's really 200mcg per ml, check your conversion factor between mcg and mg.

If the available concentration is 200 mcg/mL, then 0.5 mL would be the correct volume for 0.1 mg. I agree with Anonymous865 rhat you likely misread and/or miscopied the information.

What was the correct answer?

And I completely skipped right over that because I'm so used to drugs being stated in dosage per container.

If this is the wording of your question, then it doesn't matter how many ml are in the vial. This must be a multi-dose vial, not a single dose container.

I guess I too am wrong because I get the same answer as you.

Have you tried the formula desired/have x volume?

.1mg x 1000mcg/ml = 100 mcg (desired)

100 mcg x 1 ml = .5 ml

200 mcg

Using dimensional analysis it works out to yet another "incorrect" answer.

Yes, I misread the 200mcg/mL. However, I have a strong suspicion that OP did some misreading as well, and that it should be 200mcg/10mL.

I think so too especially since according to the manufacturer synthroid is available as 200mcg in a 10ml flip top vial or 500mcg in a 10ml flip top vial.

Of course how the manufacturer supplies it doesn't really matter. OP needs to answer the question as posed by the instructor.
