IUD's pro's & Con's

IUD's

I am doing some research on whether IUD's are still safe or not. I just had my 3rd child and my OB wants me to have one. I don't hear too many positive things about them though. The Mirena or the PAraguard. Any input.

I've also heard horror stories like someone mentioned but they are all about the Dalcon shield from the 70's and it was pulled from the market (IUDs weren't something the FDA looked at then).

The Mirena is FDA approved (which may or may not mean anything to you).

Mirena has more than one action for preventing pregnancy (blocking sperm from reaching egg, thinning uterus lining, and may stop release of egg from ovary r/t hormones) but most likely a part of each working together.

I have read how some people feel that an IUD in place causes an abortion each month (I don't feel that way, but that's me, you have to make your own choice). But I have heard of people using the placement of a copper IUD as emergency contraception (kinda like the morning after pill?).

Call your OB office, talk to the nurses, see if any of them that you trust to give you an honest opinion, and see what they think.

Talk to your OB about their reason for recommending the IUD for you. :)

I don't think anyone has said an IUD causes an abortion each month . . . . all I said was that one of the ways an IUD works is that it prevents implantation of a fertilized egg . .. but it sounds like the newer models also do other things hormonally - like preventing an egg from releasing - which is what birth control pills do too.

I highly doubt anyone having sex fertilizes an egg each month.

I totally agree which is why I'm getting an IUD. :)

Do an online search, trust me you find info that goes both ways, I even found one that was against pills b/c they cause "abortion".

I just meant that I read something during my research online to make my choice about how some people feel that way (but I know you have to look at the source (of course the American Allegiance for Life (or something like that?) is going to be against IUDs). Wasn't trying to start a debate.

Ooops, didn't mean to come off as a hot head...I've just had people say some strange stuff to my face after the word IUD comes up...

Ok, I am sort of birth control stupid. I am on the pill, but was wondering about the ring (nuvaring or whatever other brands there are). How is that one. I don't want to do the patch because I would feel self conscious about having a patch on my body, even somewhere it could not be seen. I think it would be hard to feel sexy with a patch on my butt or wherever. :1luvu:

I used the patch and loved it. Didn't have much luck with the ring. If you've had multiple children, it doesn't stay put, if you kwim. :chuckle
