Its true - very few jobs for new grads.

I have had face-to-face time with 6 (yes, s-i-x) HR people from top NJ hospitals in the past 2.5 weeks. When pushed, all admitted they won't do new grads. They said there just is no need to take a new grad these days and train them.

Sad news. Makes me wonder why people are still tormenting themselves in nursing school. Don't go thinking "it will be better by the time i graduate". From what i'm told a nursing shortage just does not exist in this area.

I've always heard there was a shortage as well, others said only a nursing shortage of nurses willing to put up with the current working conditions. Now, saddly to say, there are plenty of nursing willing to put up with and much worse for a job (as evidenced by new grads willing to work for CNA pay etc).

It's so sad. I believe the average age of the nurses employed right now is mid 40's. I still see plenty of 'need' for nurses in the units, a ton of advertised positions but no one is filling them.

What is going to happen to all the new grads being pumped out throughout the country each semester? What's going to happen if those nurses don't get hired and then pass to become 'old new-grads' ? What about when the older nurses retire?

What a mess. I am wishing you and your collegues nothing but the best. Please don't give up and although easy for me to say, keep you spirits and head up. This too shall pass. This really wasn't the case almost 3 years ago when I was a fresh new grad. Not even in the east coast (I'm from CT).

Lots of changes in such a short time. Lets hope and pray that things get better. I am afraid though that the higher ups have gotten a good taste of what it is like to hold the nursing profession by the horns-sort of speaking.

You are kind! Thanks for sharing your good thoughts and encouragement!

True, true to everything you said. The nursing profession in this area is most defnitely going to be a sad state of affairs in a few years.

If you are willing to relocate, PM me. I can give you a few hospitals in my area that have new grad positions posted.

Jessy RN, I am VERY interested in moving and learning more....unfortunately, I don't think I have enough posts to PM people...or at least am not seeing the option.
