Prison job for female RN
I work at a county jail and love it. You have to be VERY secure with yourself in terms of being a female and not letting jabs about "ugly", "fat", etc bother you....because they will throw anything out. I agree with a PP, the officers are usually worse than inmates. If you set a standard from the beginning that you refuse to be alone with an inmate and follow through, you should be fine. I get lazy officers all the time who are too busy to stick with me and you just have to move up the ranks to Sgt or Lt to get your job done. You're not there to make friends, that's for sure. It helps if you're married and happy in your marriage because you're not even thinking about meeting men at work. Corrections nursing can be the best career, but it's definitely not for everyone. Inmates and addicts are the most manipulative types of people on the planet. They will scheme to get a blank sheet of paper or a tube of A&D ointment or a bandaid. They're terribly creative and have nothing better to do with their time than to come up with new schemes for getting what they want. You have to be firm. My standard response is "Nope, I like my job and wanna keep it....I'm not allowed to give you X, Y, or Z"

What is the fate of the new graduate RN?
As a nurse who graduated about 3 years ago, I can tell you that it's better now than even a year ago. stick with it, I work at a prison (never thought I'd be here!!) and love, love, love it!! Odd positions fall open

Correctional Nursing - can any one tell me about it
Google Center for Family Guidance....many South Jersey jobs. Love mine! =)

Desk job or Prison job? Help!
As a jail nurse, I love it! I have to say that the officers are worse than the inmates for flirting. I'm not what a typical guy would want on the street, and still get the comments from inmates. Gotta build up a tough skin and smart comments like "You must be dreaming!". I agree with a PP about learning what you can and cannot give. Heck, my inmates even use their toothpaste to hang pictures. They are incredibly smart and have nothing to do all day except scheme.

Rx Adderall for a nurse
I don't know about all states, but in my state, I've worked in 3 facilities while on adderall. I'm up front about it before I go in for drug testing so it's not a surprise and I make sure I have a full letter from my physician and never fill scripts early. I know I can't function safely as a nurse without it.

Licensure by Endorsement...timing?
You definitely have to get endorsed first. I went through the same thing and most applications can't even be completed without endorsement. It took 6-8 weeks once the application was in at BON. It's involved, but no more so than other states. It's also better to be doing it now instead of in May when all the new grads are out. Lastly, the job market in Jersey is just as bad as PA right now....trust me(new grad since May 2009 working in LTC)

Has anyone worked at this LTC Facility, Berea Ohio
I did clinical rotations there in the children's hospital and grew up just around the corner. While the children were fabulous, it was a LOT of work. Lots and lots of "aid" type work was done by the nurses. Also, in that particular building, there were many aids, probably 2 or 3 LPNs, and an RN was in charge of the whole building...I think three floors. People that I know who worked there did not last long. Not sure about the adult side, but I'd think since they're managed through the same people, the distribution of patients should be similar.

Its true - very few jobs for new grads.
Jessy RN, I am VERY interested in moving and learning more....unfortunately, I don't think I have enough posts to PM people...or at least am not seeing the option.

New Grads and Clinical Hours
Great. I'm a new grad going to a career fair in a few hours....without all those certificates. Haha, here's hoping!

New Grads and Clinical Hours
I agree about the quality versus quantity. Many, many of my hours especially in OB were spent sitting, waiting. Not learning much. I would guess we did 400 hours...though it doesn't feel like that! I just tried to go back and add it up. Accelerated ADN program in the midwest.

New Jersey Nurses ... Help!!!
Hey I just moved here as well. You are able to apply for licensure here by endorsement. Mine has not been finished yet because they give you quite a run around with fingerprints. If you are out of state, they will send you cards to do in your home state. Once you get here, NO police station will fill those cards out- they send you to the electronic place NJ uses. Problem is, to get an appointment there, your address needs to be within state. It's so backwards. Good luck!!!

NEED HELP ASAP
OP, I found it really easy to use the Saunder's disc. I was able to do 100 questions at a time and reward myself with a few minutes on facebook or some other distractor. 100 questions isn't hard to get through. Then I'd quickly review my wrong answers and make a list of topics I wasn't familiar with. After getting a list together, I would google search the term or the med or the condition--- just to get a quick frame of reference. Worked for me-- shut off at 75 in just under 20 minutes!

I'm so sorry I didnt go straight for my BSN
I agree with the previous poster. It sure does stink, but I was an aid before getting my license, and lost my job because it was out of my scope of practice. There was no job that just "opened up" for me because I had worked there. Many BSN new grads, ok most where I am, don't have jobs yet either. Try really hard not to get bitter about nursing, remember why you went into this!!

New Grads with No Job...Back to School???
I am in the same predicament as you, except with an associate's degree. I started back up with an online program this month and love it! I felt as if I was losing skills and was pretty upset about job hunting every day. This program has 8 week sessions, so I am still able to job hunt. If I find something, I will take a few sessions off. There's no set time limit to complete it in. Jacksonville University. Anyways, I thought this was the best bet because otherwise you will be paying your old loans back. While most loan companies say they have hardship deferments, I found that most of mine had 6 month TOTALS for that. That's really scary to use up right away. Best of luck!
