I have never posted on this site before but have spent a lot of time reading posts. I have been following this site since nursing school '06-08. I was recently hired as a school nurse and this is my first experience doing so. I'm very excited to become involved with the kids and their health and safety. I really hope to get to know fellow nurses on this site. Everyone on here is very friendly and willing to help, I love it!! I hope everyone is ready for the new school year.
Congratulations to the new school nurses! You will love it!! This is my second year and I love it!!! I work 730-330 (7.5 hour days) and we work on the days the kids are off. Doesn't pay much (hourly is good but the time off really messes up annual pay) and we are salary.
Its all worth it! Best hours! Best staff! It is so different in a school. I hope you will have a positive experience.
By now I am sure you have notice you do a lot more than you could have ever imagined. A lot more clinical thinking is involved when there is not the safety net of a whole hospital full of people to bounce ideas off of. Esp with kids that we see now. Make sure and utilize the NASN message board, this message board and your state nurse message board if you have one. These nurses will give you great advice!!!!
Good luck!!!

Hang on tight and enjoy the ride!!! I'm now in my second year of school nursing, including summer school I got extra pay for this summer. You will learn so much and be saddened by some of the things you will see; however, you will be the only person to help some of the children you encounter; which for me is a blessing.:redpinkhe
