Published

I have never posted on this site before but have spent a lot of time reading posts. I have been following this site since nursing school '06-08. I was recently hired as a school nurse and this is my first experience doing so. I'm very excited to become involved with the kids and their health and safety. :yeah: I really hope to get to know fellow nurses on this site. Everyone on here is very friendly and willing to help, I love it!! I hope everyone is ready for the new school year.

Congratulations@@#!@@

What are your hours there? I may have a potential offer, but I'm surprised the hours are a bit longer than I would have thought !

My hours are 7:40-2:15 M-F. Basically 32.5 hours a week.

Wow, those hours are great! I would have to work 730-4pm!!! Bummed me out a bit when I heard that.... wonder why?

I just wanted to say congratulations to everyone who has been appointed a school nurse as well! Sorry I haven't responded back yet. I hope that everyone is now settled and in the groove at school. How did your first week of school go??

Specializes in Community & Mental Health, Sp Ed nursing.

Depends upon your contract. I'm on the same contract as teachers and am contracted to work 7 hour days but of course I work more than that.

Specializes in PACU, ICU, OR.

If you don't mind me asking, what kind of experience did all of you have before becoming a school nurse? Did everyone had peds experience under their belt? I have always thought I'd really like to be a school nurse and now for there is actually a position posted through my county website! I have been checking periodically for 5 years... I work in recovery with children, and I am PALS certified, soon to be a PALS instructor I hope! But I have no outpatient or inpatient peds background. I started in ICU, followed by OR. Any words of advice?

I have no pediatric experience other than my two small children. ;) I had previously worked in an urgent care and also with a company that does flu immunizations in schools and stores. I absolutely loved going into the schools to do the vaccines and stressed that point during my interview. I work in a low income area and also stressed the point of how valuable my knowledge is to these parents. Apply for the job and just be yourself!! I've never been this happy in a job before. Your background is more than most in this field! The other 3 schools in my district all have health offices that are run by CNA's!!! Apply and let me know what happens. It never hurts to try!! Good Luck! :monkeydance:
