  1. Ok so here goes! So this is my first year as a school nurse and I'm the only RN in the district and we only have 4 schools in our district. So when I first started I asked for a policy and procedure book or a handbook or whatever they'd like to call it...NONE! The others in my district are a CNA, CMA, and someone that was grandfathered in as a CNA because she's been here for almost 30 years. Once I started settling in I realized what absolute disaster everything was and nobody follows the same guidelines because we don't have any. The one who was grandfathered in has major health issues but can't afford to retire so they continue to keep her on and her daughter is the CMA at another school. I got together with my supervisor and asked what I could do to get this in order. I'm not a supervisor to the others, thank God, but I have been asked to get policies in place. If anyone is willing to forward on their policies and any guidelines and letters home they have for their district or their school I would greatly appreciate it! I really need help and need to quickly get this in place. There are so many things here that I really worry about!!!!
  2. Ha Ha I love these!! I thought this was just my school district. I'm so glad to hear that I'm not alone on these!!! You all are awesome!! :yelclap:
  3. I have no pediatric experience other than my two small children. I had previously worked in an urgent care and also with a company that does flu immunizations in schools and stores. I absolutely loved going into the schools to do the vaccines and stressed that point during my interview. I work in a low income area and also stressed the point of how valuable my knowledge is to these parents. Apply for the job and just be yourself!! I've never been this happy in a job before. Your background is more than most in this field! The other 3 schools in my district all have health offices that are run by CNA's!!! Apply and let me know what happens. It never hurts to try!! Good Luck! :monkeydance:
  4. I'm sorry to hear that you're going through this, I can relate! I don't really have a problem with the teachers telling me what to do but my prinicipal. She always asks me what my professional opinion is and then tells me I'm wrong and that it has to be done a certain way to cover the schoool's butt. Finally one day I got sick of it and told her that she needs to give me protocols for my school so I know exactly what the district wants me to do and she responded with well I don't think this district has any and if they do they are out of date. Keep in mind I was trained for our district by a woman who has been here over 20 years. Anyway I go to the point with her that when she would come into my office with a student and tell me what to do I would ignore her and immediately start talking to the student. I think after a few times she got the hint. She still tries to pull that from time to time but backs of much quicker now. My best advice is move past the teacher and show your concern to the child instead. Hopefully they will get the hint! If not maybe you should walk into their class from time to time and tell them they're teaching all wrong!
  5. I just wanted to say congratulations to everyone who has been appointed a school nurse as well! Sorry I haven't responded back yet. I hope that everyone is now settled and in the groove at school. How did your first week of school go??
  6. I have never posted on this site before but have spent a lot of time reading posts. I have been following this site since nursing school '06-08. I was recently hired as a school nurse and this is my first experience doing so. I'm very excited to become involved with the kids and their health and safety. I really hope to get to know fellow nurses on this site. Everyone on here is very friendly and willing to help, I love it!! I hope everyone is ready for the new school year.
