I have been a hospice nurse for almost a year now. We opened our inpatient facility in September, but I started orientation last July. I gotta tell ya, I LOVE MY JOB. It is scary. I adore the nurses that I work with, the aides that they have on my shift are awesome and the staffing levels are excellent. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, lol. People ask me if it bothers me when my patients die and it really doesn't. It sounds horrible, but I just know that they would have died anyway I just make it more comfortable for them and more bearable for their family. So, am I sick? I was just thinking back on my post from last year when I applied for this job and I was so scared that I was going to hate it, LOL. Now, the thought of going back to the hospital scares the crap out of me Just wanted to share:monkeydance:

Shay - it takes a special type of person to be able to handle hospice. My grandfather had hospice in his final days. i'm not sure it's something I would be able to handle or not, but I certainly appreciate the nurses that came to the house to assist.

no, you are not sick. It is rewarding to help a patient through to the end. It is rewarding to help a family keep their loved one at home.
I love my patients and families, i'm just having trouble with the business end of it right now.

Shay, If you're wrong, then I'm right there with you! I've been doing hospice for 8 years now and I couldn't imagine doing anything else. I'm so happy you found your callling.
