Is it worth the commute?

Nurses Career Support

Published

I been wanting to reapply to nursing schools but it would probably take forever to get in. I found a LVN/LPN school that cost 6K it's an adult school but the commute is like 2hrs from where I live. Is it worth it? Am I crazy to even consider it?

Only you can decide if it is 'worth it'. But $6k for a program that will get you a start on a nursing career? Heck yeah.

Could you move to be closer to the school?

I might if I really wanted.. no children and I can find a job near the school though my husband job would be a bit the problem. The program is 18 months.. ugh. Decisions decisions..

A two hour commute is probably too much daily. Though you may decide it's worth it if the driving conditions are decent. I know a couple of people that have a commute of over an hour, one is 90 minutes away and he does that every day in an area where winter weather can definitely be a problem. That said, he's married with 2 small kids and him and his wife own their home so the commute proved to be a better option than a move for him. I guess my point is two hours is a lot, but 18 months is relatively short term and a nursing program that affordable might just make the long commute totally worth it. Plus if you opt to commute you could tape lectures and get some good review/studying done on the drive home.

You also didn't mention if you would be working while you are going to school, if so that will add a whole other component to the decision. If you work it would probably be easier to commute for school than leave your job. Plus it might prove difficult to get a job closer to school, especially if you have no intention of staying in that town when school is done. Not to mention finding what would essentially be a temporary job willing to work around your school schedule could be an issue.

If the commute is really something you can't or don't want to do there's also an option to find a place to stay there during the week and come home on weekends. Of course that will add to the expenses considerably if you have to pay to maintain two households. If that sounds like a good option for you though maybe you and your husband could still stay together and takes turns commuting depending on which place you are staying. Not the best option in my opinion, but maybe something like that would work for the two of you.

With the money you'll save, you can buy a really comfortable pillow for your car.

Also, yes.

I think it's worth the commute if it's a good program and the financial math makes sense to you.

People move states to go to school for things leading to careers. So, yeah.

Don't drive tired, see if you can stay somewhere in between your home and school on some days.
