Is WI racially diverse and a good place to live?

U.S.A. Wisconsin

My in-law's just moved to Marshfield from Hawaii. My husband's step-mom is from there. My husband has been persuading me to move there with our 2 baby girls but I'm totally oposed to it. I was born and raised in Hawaii and I love the racial diversity and all my family lives here. My husband is from California but he refuses to move back there. I guess I'm against moving because I'm Asian and my husband is Black and Caucasian. This is probably stereotypical but when I envision us living in WI, I see us being the only minorities there. Am I wrong? I'll be getting my BSN in 3 years and after that we'll decided where we want to move. I love Hawaii but it is so expensive and we'll never be able to make it on our own here. We live with my parents because we can't afford rent or a house. The housing market is outrageous. We looked at a 3 bedroom house and the asking price was $800,000! My husband feels that we can buy our own house in WI. He says that WI has a wonderful public school system. Here in Hawaii, I would never dream of sending my daughters to public school just because they are substandard in my opinion. I also don't know if I could stand the Winters in WI. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I agree, I don't fit in and am actually being made fun of for being here. Can't get work and am being made to look like I am a prostitute because I am not working. and I don't DRINK

if i may, can i ask what exactly do you mean by..."..being made to look like i am a prostitute because i am not working."? i take it people are not walking up to you while you are pumping gas and saying "hey i'll pay you to sleep with me." so, how EXACTLY are you being treated like a prositute. i honestly want to know. as i said, i want to move there. i've met people down here that are from wisconsin and they are VERY friendly and they encourage me to move up there. maybe you are just having a bad experience. i have had horrible experiences in tampa,fl, but i would not say that is the way the whole state or even all of tampa is. if you feel like it, please explain your statement for the benefit of others.

sincerely,

Cat,

Where do you live here in Wisconsin? Here in Marshfield at my facility alone, as of right now there are 52 openings for nurses. That doesn't count the clinic that is atached to our hospital. And within a 50 miles radius there are 5 other hospitals that I am aware of.

I am not saying all that to mean that you are bad for not having a job, I was just wondering what the difficulties are.

I moved here from Texas over 11 years ago and have found that I had a harder time fitting in at my home state (Texas) than I do here in Wisconsin.

You do have to love the cold and snow, but then again I'm nuts or so I've been told. ;)

I am in a small town/city. Moved here because family was here. Been forced to move into a place that has a bad reputation. Because I am not working, because I couldn't get a nursing job and living in this place I am not considered "a Lady" I am an older nurse. people have actually come to me and wanted to "save" me from my sins. I don't drink, lie, steal or sleep around. What sins they are talking about I will never know. I think they actually think because I am not married that I must be loose. Now that I don't know any one I can't get out of this situation. It is small town USA. I have worked as a nurse in LTC and acute care for the past 25 years. That is all that I have done. But if any one knows where I can get a job I would appreciate it.

They also thought I was not white because I had a tan. Some one asked me " How did you get that colored skin"? my reply "The sun" Ha Ha it's not really funny.

I have lived in WI all of my life and would never leave. I know that southeast WI is very culturally diverse no matter if you are in a bigger city or out in the country. You will be amazed by the cost of living difference. My husband and I bought a 4 bedroom ranch on 4 acres for 129K - 5 years ago. It is an beautiful smaller community. The schools are great - public or private - although private is a little expensive. I don't know that much about the northern counties, as to how diversified they are but the southern counties are - you name it - we got it - we are the "melting pot" of the midwest. Good Luck with your schooling and search for your new home.
