Been in WI most of my life and would not change it. I have attempted to live in other states but am always coming home to Wisconsin. I am from the Lake Geneva area (SE) and love being out in the middle of nowhere. If I need to go to Milwaukee or Madison it doesn't take too long. I also travel up to the Northwoods to spend some relaxing time with family and friends. There is so much to do in this state that is only a car ride away. As for a union - in SE Wisonsin I am only familiar with one hospital that is part of a big entity out here. Otherwise most of the places to work are pretty good - pay is good and like everyone else stated - Taxes are high.

Hang in there. I took the NCLEX in 1997 and thought for sure that when the computer shut off after the 75th question that I failed for sure. I drove home (2 hours) crying all of the way. (I took the test where I would not know anyone) The day that the results were in the mail, I stood in the middle of the road jumping up and down and screaming (I passed!!) and all of my neighbors came outside to see what was going on and we all had a good laugh (I am glad that no one got this on video - lol). I am praying for you and can't wait to congratulate you. :biere:

It also depends on what state you are going to be working in. I am not sure about Nevada if you can work with an ADN - Several states now require BSN education for nurses. I started out with my ADN and went to BSN and now pursuing MSN. It also depends on what your goals are as to where you want to be. Good Luck.

bobo - have you spoken with anyone yet from the college regarding these questions? I do not think that you will have a hard time getting accepted. I went there for my undergrad and continued into my masters and with a high enough GPA did not have to take the GRE. There are hundreds of students who do apply to the nursing program and only a small percentage are accepted. Don't be discouraged, I thought the same thing when I applied to undergrad school. Keep your hopes up and just remain positive and that you can do anything that you put your mind to. :icon_hug: (A hugh for encouragment) Please, when looking for a place to live, talk to those who live in the area and I also encourage you to speak with the student housing department to get further information. If you have not had a chance to come up for a tour please do so and also for orientation - you can get this information on their home page at www.mu.edu and select contacts and visits. This will give you some links to the people who can answer your questions. I am sorry that I am not able to answer these questions for you - but can lead you in the right direction.:wink2:

Medical Staffing Network is another agency that works alot in Madison - I worked for them for three years. They have an office in Madison and one in Brookfield.

I have lived in WI all of my life and would never leave. I know that southeast WI is very culturally diverse no matter if you are in a bigger city or out in the country. You will be amazed by the cost of living difference. My husband and I bought a 4 bedroom ranch on 4 acres for 129K - 5 years ago. It is an beautiful smaller community. The schools are great - public or private - although private is a little expensive. I don't know that much about the northern counties, as to how diversified they are but the southern counties are - you name it - we got it - we are the "melting pot" of the midwest. Hi everyone - I am an alumni from Marquette with my BSN and also reentered there for my Masters. I really like the program and what the professors offer for their students. I personally am not in the acute care program - I am in peds (grad may 2008)- but have talked with those in acute care and they absolutely love it. I encourage you to come up and talk with some of the staff and advisors (who are also professors) about the program. I think that both of you have an excellent chance of being accepted. There is alot of work on your own - but in the end it is well worth it. I did not live on campus - I drove 70 miles one way for my classes. It is a very good idea to hook up with someone not only for carpooling but also to have a shoulder to cry on, when needed. We all know that the only ones who really understand what it is what we are going through are those who are going through the same thing. With the shortage of Nurses that everywhere is facing - WHY would anyone get rid of/phase out any nurse? I am an RN and love working with LPNs and unlicensed staff. But if I was a patient and given the choice as to who I would rather have for my care - give me the LPN any day. I am concerned about the education level of the QMA and the burden that it puts on the RN and LPN for their very limited work capabilities. We do not have them as far as I know. I agree that the voices of the LPNs needs to be heard - please contact your representatives and get others to do so as well.

I have worked in home care and am going back to it. I agree it depends on the clients that you are working with - some can make you or brake you. It is nice because you can make it work around your schedule (depending on who you work for) I am currently working for myself and it is great. I can not afford day care either but having the flexibility makes it easier so that my husband can watch our son when I am going to work and grad school. The pay is dependent on your degree and who you work for. There are a lot of variables in this case. You need to really look at different places and compare them and ask a lot of questions - the only dumb question is the one that you didn't ask (drilled in my head from previous professors). I too have left bedside nursing for similar reasons and have gone to home care/case management and am currently getting credentials for independent nursing to work for myself in this area. Good Luck to you finding your niche in the world of nursing. Hang in there.
