Is it unprofessional for instructors to do this?

There's a certain instructor who's younger than the rest, in her 20's. She is personal friends with some of her students, always commenting on their facebook or myspace, going out with them or what not. But her comments are sometimes about her students going and drinking beers for her(students are under 21 still). She also allows these students to pass without doing half the work(they brag about it). Here's where it gets fishy. 3 of her students failed med/surg by 10 points at least last semester...this semester they had her as a clinical instructor and magically passed without going to class or studying. They bragged about how it was so easy this semester. But if they cheat, it'll catch up to them so I'm not gonna worry about that, but is it professional to call a student a "h*e" or comment on their sex life and tell them to text them the day after they get drunk?

Yes this is inappropriate. If some are afraid to go to the Dean personally, then write an anonymous letter with specific incidents, etc. I would go to the course coordinator first and if there is no resolution, go to the Dean.

I recommend you going to your lead teacher of whatever year you're in and tell him/her that you want to remain anonymous. You may want to have another student from your clinical group with you as another witness.

This is very unprofessional. Clearly, your instructor does not have a boundary line between professional work and friendship. Additional to that, it appears that there academic bias or favouring going on which is unfair too.

Of course that is unprofessional.

Wait...an unprofessional clinical instructor? Shocking.

Wow, there really is no lower life form than us instructors, huh?

Anyway, to the OP: If I even one of the things you say this instructor is doing, I'd be fired and blacklisted from any other school in my area. My bosses have zero tolerance for any such things.

I have a feeling that if you do report this, it WILL be taken care of, and no one (meaning, the instructor) would ever know whp reported her. She is leaving enough of a paper trail, and eventually it will catch up with her.

I feel sorry for the students who didn't study and/or blew off clinicals and still passed. Karma will catch up with them when they're suddenly faced with test questions they can't answer (or even guess at an answer), or are asked to do a procedure they *should* be semi-proficient at, but will stumble through. The positive in the situation, though, is that the slacker professor isn't taking care of patients. If she's short-changing students paying big bucks for a quality education, how well would she treat people who aren't intentionally sick? Her license should be yanked.

Another concern I would have (as the instructor) is that her "friends" will be the first one to turn against her if they ever face a problem in the future. If they are called out for not knowing something in subsequent semesters, they may be inclined to blame her, or call her out.

I think that joke was funny, but on your side: most of my clinical instructors have been a Godsend...helping me get through the bureaucracy of nursing school and the crackpot lecture instructors. Ive always learned the most from my CIs. Thank you!

Hmmm...I know what the OP is talking about, I have seen it happened at my previous nursing school. I was not her friend and so she tried to get me kicked out. I had to leave eventually but her ass was thrown out of the school when I was through telling the NAACP about her. She was watched closely.
