Is it typical for per-diem job?

Published

Hi All,

I recently got a job as a per-diem CNA at one of the healthcare staffing companies. After the interview/orientation, they gave me some shifts ( 5 days a week, 8 hour shifts) but they've canceled my shift three days in a row. When I call them the day before and confirm my schedule, they tell me that no change has been made. However when I call them a few hours before my shift starts, they tell me that my shift got canceled.

I'm just curious if it happens sometimes. I would not be so worried if it happens once in a while, but since it happens three days in a row now, I'm getting a bit nervous. Please give me any info/thoughts/ about this. Thank you.

Why are you calling the agency to confirm? When you commit to a shift you're expected to show up. This works both ways. If my agency cancels my shift on short notice, I expect partial pay (at least two hours worth). I have two suggestions, look for another job and don't commit to any more shifts with this agency. You're not getting the shifts anyway. You could tell them that they can call you to fill a shift on short notice. If they call, you can decide whether you want it or not.

there have been many times that i was scheduled for a shift and only to find out that it was cancelled when i called to confirm. agencies will forget to call you. i've shown up at facilities and had to go home because they said they cancelled hours before, noone called me. so thats why i always called to confirm before i head out the door.

Wow - I feel spoiled now. When I worked staff relieve if we showed up at the facility and we were send home, we got paid two to four hours worth, depending on what shift it was. If the facility indeed cancelled, the agency swallowed it so they usually didn't forget. The only drawback was, once you committed to a shift, you were expected to be there no matter what. Basically, if you cut off your arm, they expected you to place a tourniquet and come to work. They didn't fire you, they just wouldn't offer you any more shifts.

This is the norm, unfortunately. I had similar experiences as a per diem worker. I had another job to fall back on, so, I didn't suffer too much. I have seen worse...the agency CNAs used at my place are treated horribly. They would be scheduled for 11p-7a, come in and be told that their shift was cancelled. That is horrible to me, to have someone come all the way out there at night to be sent home. This was before the economy crash, so, I have no idea what has been happening now.

Search for something else, but don't cut your bridges yet. The only loyalty you owe to places like that is to yourself. You have to eat.
