I just wanted to know if I'm the only that will owe alot of money when I will finally finish school?
I don't want to sound in any way all about money but I wanted to know if a nursing degree is worth it? I'm going the BSN route and by the time I finish school I'll owe soo much I won't be able to breath. My school is private all the community colleges in my area are jammed packed and have waiting list for 2 years at least. I mean not having any money during school is bad as it is. (specially when you have kids). I realize I won't be winning the lottery but I really want to be a nurse.
Maybe I'm just having the new school year jitters...
PA has a loan forgivness program in place for nurses. They will repay up to $50,000.00 in federal student loans if you graduate after 5/2001 and agree to work full time as a RN in PA for three years. I'm borrowing every penny of the over $17,000.00 a year I need for the last 2 years of my BSN.
Thanks for all your replies... I have 2 years to go and I will owe at least $30000 when I finish. (tuition is $19000 a year) After reviewing my situation the BSN route was the only way to go for me. I had so many credits/classes that I had already fulfilled the liberal arts portion of a BSN. It would take me the same amount of years to go to an ADN program anyway. We only have one state college down here that offers the BSN and believe me I would have to wait at least a good year or 2. Plus there's so many test and more requirements that your head spin. I for one am not an A student but I do my best hopefully I will try more.
I'm going to look into the hospital because I heard that they some programs. I'm also going to my financial aide office tomorrow to see if I can get some more aide... They'll have to kick me out or just give me more money. Oh and in FL it does count where you go to school. MY school is one of the top ones and they just grab you up after graduation.
I don't know maybe I just made the wrong decision and should've just went for my LPN (I had gotten accpeted out of 400 applicants they only took 20...) I gave up my spot to go to the BSN program...
Check out your state board of nursing. I know if CA, they have a loan forgiveness program if you agree to work in a medically underserved area for a year. At first I thought that these would be really remote areas, but I found out that the hospital that I used to work at (in downtown LA) qualified.
You are not alone by any means. With the cost of education these days I doubt there are few people no matter what they are studying that don't have loans.
I also live in PA and am hoping that our state will pay of some loans once I graduate and start working. You should take a look around Florida for a program like ours. I honestly thought that I saw a headline a few weeks ago that said Jeb Bush signed a similar legislation reimbursing nursing students.
I allready have a BS in Science and a large loan from that so I am uneligable for Student Grants and am trying not to take out any more loans unless I absolutely have to.
I think the loans will be worth it if you really enjoy what you are doing and can make a decent living while doing it. I'm in Pittsburgh and there are very few jobs (non-medical) in our area. So, I like to think that even though I may have debt at least I'll be working and have career options and enjoy what I do. So many other people my age are not working or leaving the area alltogether because there just isn't anything here for them.
interesting part to Emory... all of my friends at who work at Northside Hospital and Kennestone HATE working with Emory grads stating they all seem like imbecils and make horrible decisions. Even my midwife said that when I mentioned going to Emory for the Midwifery program. her comment "OH GOD, not EMORY....You may as well learn medicine from a butcher!"
Don't think I'd be paying more for that....Kennesaw State University is just fine, thank you! :)
