Is there a science portion on the NET?

Published

In my research on the NET I've read conflicting things.

I just received my "Study Guide for the Net, Hobit and Help Entrance Tests" which states there *is* a science portion, but there are no practice questions in this category, so I really don't know what they are like.

I do have other general study guides (for nurse entrance exams) that do have science portions, so I figure I will just study these.

But can anyone who has taken the NET shed some light on this area? How many science questions were there and how do you recommend studying?

thanks in advance :)

Orindamom, there is a science section on the NET, but it isn't used in the calculation of your composite. I took the NET last year at Samuel Merritt, with no sleep the two nights prior (studying/working) and managed to score an 87. Not great, but not bad.

They use the non-scored sections of the test, as a way to improve the predictive value of future exams. And frankly, the test is very easy. I'm sure you'll do fine:)

Haven't you posted to other threads, as someone who is interested in SMC? I'm waiting to hear from them now. Can't stand the waiting...

Hi Turbo - yes, I'm applying to SMC - I'm going to apply to the entry level masters in January. Hmmmm, the test doesn't sound very hard, but obviously I want to do well so I figure I will just study the study guides that I have. They don't consider your science score at all?

Oops, forgot to send you good wishes in your waiting....I can't imagine how hard that would be - I know I will go crazy :)

Orinda, the way it was explained to me is that they have two science sections on the NET exam. "Science Reading Comprehension", and "Basic Science" (comprised of A&P, Biology, Cellular Biology, Chem). They count Science Reading Comp (along with Essential Math Skills, and Critical Thinking Appraisal) as part of your scored test, and the others (Written Expression, Basic Science, Stress Level Profile, Learning Style, and Test-taking Skills) as non-scored sections. And the reading comp section wasn't really science related. More like regular reading comp on any other standardized exam (SAT, ACT, etc). They'll explain it better at the start of the test. You'll even see some people leave after the first three (the scored) sections, because they don't care about the non-scored part.

Per my scoresheet, 69% is the national average, and the math isn't anything to worry about (I got 100%, and I'm math challenged). I don't think it had anything harder than Algebra-II.

If you're smart enough to compete for a spot in the SMC ABSN/ELMSN then you'll crush the NET test.

No Worries :)

I just took the NET on August 29. There were no science questions (i.e., no chemistry, biology or A&P questions), but the reading comprehension sections were all (fairly easy) science. Is there more than one version of the NET? It was/is my understanding that there is not. I took their online practice test right before I took the real test, and there was no science on it, other than the topics of the reading comp sections. There is science on the HESI A2 and the NLN... If the NET has changed, or if I am wrong, please let me know.

I checked my NET scoresheet, and the sections noted above were on it. Perhaps they don't use the non-scored test sections on every exam. Who knows. I'm sure you did wonderfully :)

I took the Net, I am 34 and haven't been in any school setting for 17 years. I got the Net, Hobet study guide as you have and did all the sections in it for 2 weeks. I too was nervous. When I took the test I scored a 94 and was ecstatic. As far as a "Science section" goes, the only science I had was on the reading comprehension and you answer questions from the paragraph(s) provided. You DO NOT have to pull biology, chemistry or anything from your memory. That is the reason there are no "Practice" questions in the study guide. The math is just like it is in the study guide.

Good luck.

Thank you all so much, that really helped.

I'm not worried about the math. I figure I will just study the study guide and maybe review the other study guides I have. My main weak area is vocabulary, based on the general study guides I have. My husband was horrified! I'm such a voracious reader, I think I have a good vocabulary, but apparently I am delusional. :uhoh3::lol2:

I studied the darn grammar (I used to teach English Comp. for goodness sake! LOL) and there weren't any grammar or vocab. sections on my test. I asked the proctor about that afterward, and she said the school chooses not to use those sections. So you might inquire which sections your school tests you on. But in all cases, remember, it's the Reading Comprehension and Math Skills sections that count. And don't worry about being perfect -- my combined score was a 92, and my percentile score was 99th percentile. So you can make a few errors on the test and still look really good. ;) I am not sure if the percentile score is a national comparison or only a comparison of people at your school, and I don't have the paperwork handy to figure that out. But definitely chill.

I would check with your school. I just took the Net on sept.10th and mine only had math and comprehension on it.I ran out of time on the comprehension and still amnaged to pass it.
