Is a relief/casual position same as per diem?

Help! Just relocated to another part of the country and I see relief and casual positions listed, but I'm not sure if that would be considered the same as per diem or prn (just different terminology)? Does anyone know what is typically expected for scheduling out of a relief or casual nurse?

How about calling the HR dept and asking. I too am a military spouse and the crazy terminology drove me crazy...sometimes ya just gotta ask.

Yes, they are essentially the same thing. But since facilities vary with their requirements for working, best to check with the HR Depts directly. Some require that you work two weekend shifts per month, as well as one major holiday, as well as one minor holiday per year, etc. Others only require one shift per 6 week schedule.

Best to get the info right from the horse's mouth, as they say.

Thanks for the replies. I had called HR at one of the hospitals and their reply was basically, "it depends upon the needs of the unit." It's a little frustrating, because in the Southwest facilities really seemed to try to accomodate a nurse as best as they could. I guess it can't hurt to do the online app and see what happens:chuckle

Thanks! My hubby just retired and it has been so frustrating moving and seeking employment each time. I think I got spoiled when we lived in TX and AZ...definately was not spoiled in the SE U.S.
