Is it okay to ask for an extended start date?

I have been offered a job which I have accepted the soonest start date that I could attend per the facility would be may 10th which is only 20 days away from me getting my tuition reimbursment paid out at my current facility. So my question is do you think it would reflect poorly on me to explain this to my future employer and request to start in June instead?

I think it couldn't hurt to ask-better to be honest about the situation.

I haven't done this before, but just thinking... instead of explaining that you just want to wait to get money, could you explain that you want to tie up loose ends with your previous employer? Or that you would like to see to the wrap-up of a "project" or something like that? Maybe put a bit better spin on it, and make you look better? Only thing is, you may be asked "What project?"

Just ask and be honest.

Personally in the present climate where everyone is complaining about having trouble finding jobs I'd probably let it go and just start when asked. The places I work for also have certain times for scheduled facility orientations.

I don't think it hurts to ask and be honest the reasoning behind the request yet also stress you would be more then willing to forego that if the job needed you earlier. My guess is they will want you to start sooner but it is worth a try.
