Hi guys,
I'm a male pre-nursing student and I actually just got accpeted into my school's nursing program whoop! whoop!, so I'll start in the fall of 2011. I also got accpeted into the honors program and my main question is, by having a minor in honors will it help you get a job or stand out over the other people... I have a 3.9 GPA right now and working two jobs, so I'm really debating on whether or not Honors with a nursing major is nessessary. I would apreciate any input on this.

No. When you are in the midst of med/surg, pharm, and 12 hour clinical days, you are very short on time. Don't sell yourself short. There are plenty of other ways to beef up your resume. Volunteering, joining organizations, doing research, etc.

It depends on the details. If the honors program takes away from your nursing studies and causes you to get lower grades, etc. , then it may not be worth it. However, if the honors program provides you with opportunities to work on special projects that enhance your nursing preparation, then it can definitely be worth it.
For example: I recently arranged for a student to do her required honors project on a nursing unit that rarely hires new grads. She made a good impression on them and has just been hired there as a new grad. Without the honors project, she never would have gotten that job.
It all depends on the details of the specific situation. When there is lots of competition for the best jobs, you want to identify those activities that can help you get the job you seek. It can be student employment in the area ... volunteer work ... extra-curricular invovlement ... or it can be an honors program. These usefullness of these opportunities depend on what you do with them.

^ what llg said! Definately find out what is required to maintain honors status from a nursing student perspective. I have 4 classmates that are in the nursing program and in the Honors program. They chose to use their nursing courses as their honors courses. So they have to maintain a certain GPA, all while putting MORE clinical hours than the rest of us and/ or have an extra paper or project to get honors credit. But ask your future nursing instructors what they require.
