Is marijuana addictive?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

A couple of us were having this discussion tonight. One nurses says no it is not addictive. I said "well I've know some potheads who couldn't stop smoking, couldn't face life without pot, etc." Sounds like an addict to me.

She says it's not been proven to be physically addictive.

Actually, I'm of the belief anything can be addictive, especially if it's mood altering, or even endorphin raising.

teach your kids not to have sex and do drugs when they're 12-- that's the closest you will come to a sucessful war on drugs.

I agree! Excellent point!

Sadly though, some parents won't put the bong down long enough to teach these lessons.

Exactly Heather. YodaKelly, I agree with you, but as Heather stated, most parents don't teach these things, or else we wouldn't have this problem, legal or not.

All we can do is keep up on current research findings and act on those, rather than clinging to sentimental associations from the '60's and doing nothing.

I really doubt that kids are having sex and doing drugs at 12!

Maybe 14 at the youngest but more like 16 or so.

But 12!?

They don't know sex and drugs from shinola and wouldn't have a chance even if they did, unless they were unsupervised.

Rusty, took my first toke at 13, and had my first beer shortly thereafter. And I definitely was NOT unsupervised. Just sneaky.

For what it's worth. :)

i agree that the parents aren't teaching. i even agree that it's sad and pathetic. i just think it's a way bigger problem than some stupid super bowl commercial can even begin to fix. i have no sentimental associations to the '60's- they were way before my time. i'm not apathetic, i just don't think it's realistic to believe that a commercial is going to undo years of influences toward drugs/ sex and whatever else. if the learning doesn't happen at home, i think it's unlikely to happen at all.

Agreed. But I sure am not going to dismiss the impact the stupid commercial may have on someone, even if it's a parent that decides: "DUH! Maybe I should talk to my kids!"

Trust me yodakelly, we're on the same page here. :)

Yeah, that was my first baby. Of course, after 9 or 10 they all start to blur together, you know?

Nope, wait--that's still beers. :p

yeah, you are right: perhaps it will do some good to someone out there.

i think i'm too leftist, "people are gonna do it anyhow, so make it legal and make some money" to find use in those ads. most of my experiences w/ pot have shown it to be pretty benign. 'course if i had kids to worry about, maybe i'd feel differently. imo, sex is more dangerous (and more addictive?! ) than marijuana by far though.

Then I'm assuming the 12 year old patients I have on a semi regular basis are all products of immaculate conceptions? And their lengthy drug histories written in imaginary ink in their charts?

Perhaps things are a little different in the rest of the world than they are on your mountain.

Heather

I may be totally off (and probably am).

It just kinda blows my mind of a 12 year old having a baby!

We have taught our kids about sex early on (like 6 or 7) and keep on reinforcing the idea that bad choices can indeed mess up your life.

As far as drugs are concerned we try to teach about that too but I have to admit there are some drugs that I know nothing about and I figure they are not around much anyway. Crack is one of these drugs.

They have asked me about pot and I have been honest and truthful about it regarding what is does and how it is etc...

My kids have talked to us about all these things and ask questions. They have told us about the senior in High school who had a baby (big scandal) and it was a good oppourtunity to talk about why sex isn't a great idea right now.
