Is being a Male nurse weird?

Hey everyone. I will be training to become an RN soon. I am an african american. I have read some articles and a few of them scared me about being a nurse just because your a guy. They say its more of a womans job but those were based on opinion. Can someone please tell me of male nurses are common today? Thank you.

My mom's best friend was the first and only female medical student at colorado university. She was really put through the wringer and had to be twice as good as her male peers because she couldn't just fly under the radar.

By the time she retired, women MD's were not unusual, now they are about a dime a dozen.

I'm a male nurse - It's awesome. Everyone brings their own individuality to nursing. As a whole, however, men bring a different aspect. I believe having both men and women in nursing is only 100% beneficial for patients. Yes, more women are nurses, and they are awesome nurses, but so are we! Without trying to be sexist, I believe a woman's ability to multi task and cover bases with most men's ability to focus on a single task. We work better together, men and women. It's how it was meant to be!

I had a lot of old army buddies give me heck when I decided to become a nurse. I just smiled and said I would be hanging out with 90% women instead of 98% men so which one of us was gay? There are a whole lot of mail nurses and not as much trouble as you might think with women patients.'

The answer to your question is NO. Being a male nurse is not weird. From my experience as a male nurse in Kuwait I believe that number of male nurses is increasing. This is not only in Kuwait but also in the neighboring countries, namely Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman. In fact I could safely say that men in the Middle East have no problem being nurses. Different cultures have different views, one culture's acceptable behaviour is viewed in another culture as taboo. Also, you need to remember Daniel that nursing profession is not a matter of gender issue but it's all about what you want to be. According to the International Council of Nurses (ICN) "nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. Nursing includes the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and the care of ill, disabled and dying people. Advocacy, promotion of a safe environment, research, participation in shaping health policy and in patient and health systems management, and education are also key nursing roles". I don't think there's anything strange about it at all! I'm just a volunteer in a hospital right now and I have to say the male nurses were always far more willing to help me with the tasks I couldn't do by myself than the female ones. They're also just generally more laid back and easier to get help from. I wouldn't let a silly gender stereotype stop you from following your dreams!

I The only time I felt weird being a guy was in nursing school during my OB rotation.

Which is funny, because oftenly it is a male MD delivering the baby.
