Hello,
Why is it easy to be honest with complete strangers?
I am 30 years old male, and I was just accepted into a nursing program a year ago. I was very excited, but I allowed people to talk me out of the program. I was told that I was to old, that I had a weak stomach, that they don't see me as a nurse, and it would be hard becoming a nurse because I am a male. I thought they were right, but a year later I find myself regretting not starting the program.
I completed the Navy, so the navy would pay my rent, tuition, and my book fees. So money is not the issue.
I don't like my current job. I have been put on probation at my job, and I feel like it's a blessing in disguise. And I have done so many desk jobs and don't like it. I work at a school doing filing, grades, and busy work. The job does not satisfy me. Come to think of it, I don't like desk jobs, I have way to much energy, and I love being social. I care about my fellow man. My job's pay is alright, but the health insurance is horrible, i do as many hours as i would a nurse, and I come home feeling like why am i doing this job. I can't support my wife, I don't feel like my work as any meaning to me, and it's dull. If I became a nurse, I could offer her more, and most importantly the job could give me value.
My wife's main concern is what if I don't like nursing. My question to her is what if it is what i been looking for all this time!!!!
Can anybody out their relate?
i was 43 when i graduated from nursing school. i'm living the dream as an icu nurse! with age comes life experience. get your degree; the opportunities are so wide open to the type of nursing available, you can keep changing careers and never leave the profession!
god bless your endeavors!

Hello louis345:
When I was 30 a friend of mine begged me to become a nurse and I did no pay attention to her. Now I'm 56 and regretting not having taken the class at that time. I just finished my requirements and like me there are many thousands traying to get into the program but we cannot. If you don't like nursing in the end, just put it aside and go back to your old job... and in few days you'll be appliying looking for a nursing job... or maybe when you become 56 y/o.

what are you waiting for??people are trying to descourage me too, even tough I never asked for their opinion and I m 100 % convinced about wanting to be a nurse. Many times being a nurse is a vocation and we have to trust our feelings...
I know that I won't always be enthusiastic,it's a hard job at times, but in my case I prayed about it and I was given the answer.I see others in a chrsistian way so to me being a nurse would be a privilege...anyways,if you are a compassionate person it's the best thing you can do in your life...and 30 is a perfect age to make a necessary change, you feel like you shouldn't be doing something you hate and I know that feeling. It's also a well payed and inetresting job :)
I was pinned last Wednesday night on my birthday. I turned 54 that night. My HESI exit scores were in the top 7% of the nation. Yes, I have socks older than some of my class mates. So what? Its not that I'm that smart. I just have a great work ethic. And thank God for the women that have encouraged me. You can't blame the girls if you don't follow your dream. You listen to the people that support your beliefs. I had strong women teach me how to pull up my BGPs and fall in! Put on your gloves, grab some wipeys and let's go clean some dirty butts, love the unlovely, and ignore the the bitter characters that should have quit long ago!
I understand self doubt. About 18 months ago, I came and asked some of the same questions.. there are some good people here. Hang around the positive people and get off your butt, sailor!
30 years old...............too old............good grief.

This is just priceless, lol. I love it.
Oh, and yes there will be things you don't like. I hated OB. So what? I helped some hurting girls. Most young enough to be my daughter. You'll find something you don't like about ANY job! But is it for you? Is that what draws you to nursing? Careful! Its for them. Those who are suffering. Good luck and God Bless you in your choice.
Sorry if I sounded like a mean old Warrant Officer............................ ;-)

You are not too old! You are still a spring chicken!!!! Believe me!!! In my class alone right now we probably have arond 50 students, a good portion are males (not the majority but still a good 12-20 of them are). In addition to that, one of the men who seems to be doing well is around 40ish, and he also is looking for a career change. The other gentleman is retired 60+ not sure exactly. He was really laid off from work, so he is going for a career change too! Another lady I would say she is close to 50 and is in my LPN program. Not sure of her story. Plus, my grandpa is 73, he waited until he was 50 to go to business school, graduated and became the vice president of a company. He just stopped working there a few years ago. You are definetly not too old, and it doesn't matter if you are a male. My dad and I are both going through the LPN bridge program now, and I am not fresh out of high school myself :)

Oh, I did forget to mention: GI Bill is paying for most of my nursing school expenses -- all the tuition, plus a stipend every month! Whoo hoo
Check into that, as well. You're probably qualified to apply.
