Is it just my unit?

Published

Does your unit clerk think (s)he runs the unit. Do they overstep their bounds and attempt NURSING care? My clerk knows more about nursing issues than admitting patients in the computer. She's in the patients room "helping" when she needs to answer phones and constantly telling nurses what they should be doing because "she" knows how it feels to be a patient. Plz, share your opinions. Because, i know it can't just be my unit.

No, our unit clerk wouldn't overstep their bounds, but they did treat me and the other newbies with alot of attitude.

Specializes in NICU.

Nope, never. They have their own set of duties to do, just like we have our own set duties to do. It wouldn't be tolerated where I work. If it's allowed to happen though, it will.

I find our unit clerks to be godsends, in different ways. We have the old experienced pro that might not always be up on technology - when I come in I re-fax all med orders to pharmacy - but knows everything else. With the exception of the multi-purpose machine difficulties (and Yes, I have showed her how to use, and taped directions to the front of machine of step by step instructions :)) she is awesome. Then we have 2 younger unit clerks that are equally fantastic but for different reasons.

Of course, I only see these ladies a few hours a day - from 1900-2330 on my 1900-0730 shift, and then from 0700 - 0730. From 2330 until 0700 we are each our own unit clerks. And I must say, I am a great one LOL
