Is this job worth it?

Published

Hi,

I'am a new ARNP and I have been offered a position in the particular specialty I would love to practice in, which is infectious disease. Its a part time position for 2 days, 16 hours/week with no benefits that has the potential to become a full time position. They only problem is its about an hour away from my home (28.3 miles) so I will drive about 60 miles a day to and from the facility. Its DEEP down in south florida which means the ride home will be about a 2 hour ride. Is this really worth it, putting the mile on the car for two days or should I continue to wait? I havent had any call backs from the numerous positions ive been applying to plus I havent been in clinical practice as a RN over the last 8-9 years. I've just been doing care planning and case management. Any suggestions????? Thank you!

Specializes in Peri-op/Sub-Acute ANP.

I have the potential to be an astronaut, but it's unlikely!

What you have to determine is how likely is it that this position will go to full time, with benefits, in the near future. What is their plan? What do they foresee your role evolving into, and why is it not feasible for them to take you on FT now? What is it that they think is going to change that will trigger your becoming FT?

Of course, if nothing else is on the horizon and you can live off the pay and 16hrs a week, there is probably little downside to taking the job while you continue to look for other work. As a new NP a little experience might go a long way with other potential employers, even if this doesn't pan out.

Driving an hour each way 2 days a week would not be the deal breaker for me. That is not THAT much time in the car for only a few days per week. I drive an hour to work daily-i enjoy the alone time in my car!

If you are looking for a full time job, though, that would be more of a deal breaker if they cannot guarantee you FT in the future.
