Is green card needed for job as nurse's aide??

Hi!

I'm a registered nurse of ten years from the UK, and have recently moved to Ohio USA on a fiancee visa, NOT a work visa, to marry an American citizen. I passed my NCLEX in April this year before emigrating.

I'm about to apply for my EAD and AOS and am looking for some advice ~ I know I can't work as a RN here until I have my Green Card, but would it be possible to apply for a job as a nurse's aide once my Social Security is validated for work purposes when I get my EAD??

Obviously it would be a big help to be able to get a position in a hospital so I can get an idea of how the US system works compared to the UK, while waiting for my Green Card to be processed. I've emailed the Ohio State Board of Nursing with this query a couple of times, but keep getting Yahoo's 'MailerDaemonFailure' notice... *sigh...*

I'd contact your local immigration office to be sure. I can't imagine that you could work in the US without a work permit. But your immigration office would be the best place to start.

I know I can't work at all without a permit... it's more a case of, do I need my Green Card for a job as a nurse's aide, with the skill requirement being so much less for that, as opposed to definitely needing it for a post as a RN?

You could probably ask human resources at the place that you are interested in. They'd probably know all the legalities of employment.

Thank you, too. :nuke: I'm going to start phoning around as soon as I get a new cell phone ~ my one from the UK won't work over here.

After getting married, you can apply to get an EAD which would enable you to work even as an RN (as long as you already have the license in the state where you plan to work) and get an SSN. I know that the processing of the EAD doesn't take that long, perhaps about 90 days maximum (under normal circumstances). But to be certain, you can always contact an immigration lawyer.
