Is going into Nursing a good idea?

Published

Since having my two children (one is now a toddler and the other is an infant) I've realized I would love to become a nurse. I've always had a special place in my heart for children, the elderly, and animals. I love caring for someone else and helping out. IT makes me feel accomplished. I love being a mother even when it's tough, and I am passionately dedicated.

I'm currently in school, though it is for a pre-medical degree (bio-chemistry) and I'm considering switching to nursing (BSN) with a goal of becomming a CRNA. I'm alittle hesitant as it seems recently, EVERYONE is going to school for nursing, even people I would never have considered to be nurse material. I think this is because they hear about "the nursing shortage" and the paycheck for that career, which I understand as someone in a family of 4 living off about $2,500 a month. But I feel that by the time I finish, there will be 0 job openings for me and an overabundance of new grad nurses.

Should I continue into nursing or find another feild? Any tips or advice for someone considering? I appriciate the help.

I really loathe how so many people on here are giving such doom and gloom answers. If you hate healthcare, leave it!!! There are plenty of other things you can do. If not, get over it and atleast TRY to be positive otherwise your life is going to be absolutely miserable, if it isn't already. Not everyone hates healthcare just because you do. Just sayin.

The OP asked a straight forward question and was given straight forward answers. I think we have been honest with her and not gone into any vitriol about the profession. If she had wanted roses and high fives for considering the job she could go to the student section.

An honest answer sometimes bites.

Your honest answers are honest, personal OPINIONS....I just don't like it when people try to speak for everyone else like the above poster did..."Stay away from healthcare, everyone hates it from doctor to housekeeper"

AND...just because somebody gives a positive answer and says they love nursing and think it's a great move doesn't mean they are just blowing air up her skirt and offering "roses and high fives". Maybe, just maybe, they are giving their honest opinion that they like it...I know, who would'a thunk it right?

Also, I really hate suggesting what other people should do in terms of career. I know what makes ME happy and what I need out of a job and career to be happy, but I don't have a flipping clue about anyone else. Just because some here may or may not have made a different decision if faced with it today doesn't mean nursing is a good or a bad choice for the OP.

If I'd listened completely to allnurses when I was considering nursing school I'd have missed out on what has been one of the best things I've done for my life. If I paid too much attention to all the doom and gloom here about jobs, instead of working as a nurse I'd be curled in a ball in a corner somewhere rocking back and forth and pulling my hair out. Internet forums attract more critics than contented people.

I guess my point to the OP is to listen to what people say here, take it with a grain of salt, and make your own decision about what you want to do with your life and career. I still recommend trying to arrange a shadowing experience and go from there.

I am sure that the OP, as an adult already knows about how to gather information in order to make her own decisions ;). It's kinda obvious that each post, coming from individual posters, reflects only the opinions of that poster. :)
