Is electronic charting done at your job?

My hospital has electronic charting. We were told as nurses that MD's enter their own orders. The only exceptions are if they are outside of the hospital and have no access to our computer charting system or in the case of an emergency. I have encountered two MD's who feel as though if you call them seeking new orders, you should then enter the orders in the computer system for them. I was wondering how many others have encountered this same situation at their facility?:nurse::banghead:

I simply explain to the doctors the reasoning behind the computerized charting, and if they don't like it, then someone higher than them will hear about it. We also are not to take verbal's any longer, and I don't. Most MD's at my hospital are good about doing their own orders... now doing them correct is a whole different story... we are forever calling and reminding them of things they forgot to order.

yes, electronic charting is done at my job. the physician's are expected to enter their orders, but if we call an md for orders, chances are it will be a whole lot faster if we just input the orders for them.

that's what i do, but that's assuming the doc is off the floor (and not all the floors in the hospital are on CPOE) and/or not in house. if the doc is standing right there, i usually ask for what i need, then say 'you'll put that in, right?' that usually does it.

we have computer charting, and SOME of the doctors use the computer system to write in orders. it is really convenient, but we still have a few MDs that still hand write orders... they also tend to be the ones who have the most illegible handwriting.

computerized charting has been around a long time, and most of our house staff is very comfortable with it. computerized order entry is relatively new, and many of our attendings refuse to learn to use it. they want us to take verbal orders (which we're not supposed to do unless they doing a sterile procedure and the order can't wait). i've learned to just tell them that we're not allowed to take verbal orders, and they need to track down a resident to write the order for them -- or take the class and learn how to do it themselves.

now that it's july again, there's a rash of new house staff who haven't figured out the computerized charts and ask me to "just sign me in, would ya?" usually what they want is for me to drop what i'm doing, rush to the computer, sign in and then let them surf at will on all the patients on their service under my id. that's not going to happen! one particular resident on saturday night was very upset when i told him he could sign himself in, and then when he told me "but i don't have a password", i pointed at the big ole sign above the computer and said "then call that number and they'll help you out with that."
