Is charge nurse considered supervisory position?

Nurses Career Support

Hello,

I am applying to a graduate school and they want three LOR from a person in managerial/supervisory role. I already secured two from my two managers and was thinking of asking my charge nurse for the third one. Is charge nurse a supervisory position? I tried asking the school and they are so ambiguous, they keep saying “someone who knows you in a supervisory capacity.”

Yes, at my workplace, we have regular day & night Charge Nurses (Supervisors) who are salaried. They were hired for that and that is their job description. Some of our experienced RNs also cover for being charge temporarily in the absence of the Supervisors.

At my facility it is mostly the nurse with most experience (and who has been trained) but we are rotating (I am also one of the charge nurses on certain days sometimes).

Yes, as long as that nurse was charge during a shift you worked they were indeed your direct supervisor so if you have a charge that you feel will provide a positive letter of course you can ask them to write one for you.

Yes, 100% your charge RN is “someone who knows you in a supervisory capacity.”
