That's why I added the caveats about 5th baby, history of fast labors, etc. and said clearly "call your provider". That call allows the provider to ask more questions, like are you having a lot of pelvic pressure, or a lot of bloody show, which means she may be further along than her contractions suggest.

You should also know that your situation was YOUR situation, and may not have been typical. The doctors and CNMs have to think about not wasting resources by sending women in if we are not pretty sure they are in true labor and will be staying. Nurses get upset with me if I send in too many women who get sent home again. They may not keep a woman who is making slow progress, or who is less than 2 cm. Why? It ties up a nurse and a bed for hours.

I can think of a dozen reasons for a pregnant woman to go the hospital before going into labor, however, we are not permitted to give any medical advice on this board.

If you have questions about labor it is best to seek the advice of your physician.

I don't get it...where did she ask for medical advice? I thought medical advice is when you tell a patient what to do and what not to do. She is simply asking for signs and symptoms.

I am much less concerned about crossing some line re: giving medical advice, because the supposed rule against that is one of the silly traditions that hold nurses back. If you look up the ANA's definition of nursing, or if you review the state laws that define our scope of practice, it is clear that health education is a nursing role. We cannot give patients the information they need to make good decisions about their health if we constantly fear that something we say is practicing medicine.

Not giving medical advice on this message board has nothing to do with the "silly traditions that hold nurses back" and everything to do with the Terms of Service we all agreed to when joining. We are not allowed to give medical advice here.

I think the OPs question has been answered, if the question is relating to your own personal circumstances I would advise you speak to your health care provider.

We are not permitted to offer medical advice on the site as kids had quite rightly pointed out (thank you)

therefore to make sure we adhere to the terms of service, this thread is closed
