I am doing my pre-reqs now and hope to get into the Fall 08 program. Any feedback whether positive or negative would be appreciated!
TIA
Hi-
I tried to apply for the Suffolk Nursing program at the Brentwood Campus for Spring 2009 and did not get in. I called up admissions and they stated that only 40 people out of 300 got in, which is 13% of the applicants. I have received an A in A &P 1 and 2 and I am in the process of taking Microbiology with a current average of a 99. I already have my Bachelor's degree from Hofstra University and took English and Psych there, but only got a B+ in both classes. Does anyone have any advice for me? I feel that I am a good student, but it is just really competitive. This is extremely frustrating process!!!
Any advice would help!!!
Thanks!:redbeathe
It seems outrageous to me that there are so many applicants for so few available seats in the program. I'm truly sorry about that; it must be incredibly frustrating to have to sit through that admissions process.
In my part of upstate NY, there are several programs with no waiting lists. There are pre-reqs, of course, but no numbers of applicants like what you're describing. If you're able to relocate...!
Here are some local programs here...

I wish you much luck and success.
Hi-Thanks for responding. Moving is not an option for me...
Thanks again.
Jen
Don't mention it! Moving isn't an option for most people; this was just an alternative.
I sincerely hope you're able to get into the program you want. I'm finding school to be very challenging, but also very rewarding.
Much luck to you!
Jen...I am in Suffolk Right now and I did applied for 09 and got rejected as well. My grades are all B and B+'s plus I taking Micro and Im doing super well- Anyways, it is a shame. I've seen ppl getting in with much lower grades than ours ( like 2.9) I don't get it. If you try for Fall in the Ammeran Campus, chances are much Higher. I applied for Molloy, but haven't heard from them. I'm sure Ill get in...I know it is expensive, but Education is always a good invesment in my opinion. Another option for you, why don't you try to apply at the Good Sam? They have reserve seats for SCCC students- I went to a job interview and it went real good; hopefully, Ill get the job- Don't give up, Im sure that once you finish Micro, you will be a strong Candidate.
Good Luck,
Mel
Just a gentle reminder, everyone...

Thanks, and carry on!
Hey Mel,
Thanks for your encouragement. So, I finally went to a counselor and realized that when I took Intro to Pysch I received a C+ instead of a B+. Right now my GPA is a 3.5. I am taking the Intro to Psych CLEP exam on Saturday morning, if I pass that my GPA will be 3.85; it is highly unlikely for me to do well on the exam since I really haven't had time to study due to Micro.
I am just wondering what everyone's GPA's were for the admittance into the program at Suffolk (evening program). If you could let me know that would be great!!!
Also, do they really not look at your Micro grade? If not, that is so frustrating b.c I got an A in that class.
I wish the application was more than 5 lines, if they had a formalized process with recommendation letters, a personal statement and other information I think it would make it more fair. Ok, I am done with my b*tching.
HEY..IM GLAD YOU WORKED IT OUT- DO WELL ON THAT TEST AND YOU WILL BE BETTER THAN FINE. AS FOR ME, I GOT INTO MOLLOY. IM GOING FULL TIME AND IM STARTING SOME NURSING COURSES NEXT WEEKKK! IM SO EXCITED! I GOT A NICE LITTLE SCHOLARSHIP AND OF COURSE SOME LOANS AS WELL. BUT, I KNOW IS GOING TO BE WORTH IT. AT LEAST I GET IT OVER WITH AND I DON'T HAVE TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL FOR BSN.
BY THE WAY, THEY DO NOT LOOK AT MICRO GRADE...BUT THEY DO LOOK YOU TOOK IT SO YOU WILL BE A PERFECT CANDIDATE. I HEARD FROM THE NURSING COUNSELOR AT GRANT CAMPUS THAT EVEN SOME 4.O STUDENTS DID NOT GET IT. THEY ONLY TAKE 30 STUDENTS AT GRANT AND 60 AT SELDEN. THEY SHOULD EXPAND THEIR PROGRAM..OH WELL THEIR LOSS. BEST OF LUCKS TO YOU:heartbeat..LET ME KNOW HOW YOU MAKE OUT.
MEL
If I were you I would apply to both Stony Brook and Suffolk. If you get accepted to both go to Stony Brook and get your BSN directly. Call them and make an appointment to see what prereqs you need for Stony Brook or check website. I met with the assistant Dean Phil Tarrantino(I think thats his name) real nice guy and explains everything clearly. I have a previous Bachelors so I wanted stony brook but one of my letters of recommendation was recieived to late. For Stony Brook you may need organic Chem and take Physics as well because it makes you look more attractive as a candidate. You may want to get a part time job/volunteer as well. Again don't quote me on prereqs for stony brook you have to look into that. For Suffolk try to get above at least a 3.5 between all 4 of those classes although nothing is guaranteed. If your GPA is weak find out about the hospital partnership program between suffolk and the 5-7 local hospitals then get a job at one of those Hospitals - this is a round about way of getting in if your grades are not up to par. Basically the Hospital will pay for your school with a commitment to work their afterwards and grades are not as much a factor for this specific program.....Good Luck and please repond with any ?????'SMike
Hello Mike.
I have been accepted to suffolk ammeran and I am on the waiting list for stony brook two year program, there is a chance I might be accepted into stony brook. I had already in my head decided I was not going to go to stony brook, since I have my first bachelors in psych from stony brook. when I looked into what is needed to get into the masters program, I really dont need another bachelors, I just need the associate and will be able to apply to a masters program which is my ultimate goal. so my question to you is, do you think I will be making a mistake if I get accepted to stony brook and I turn it down?
please advise.
thank you
Kamryn
I am currently a student at Suffolk's Brentwood campus and just applied for the Fall 2010 nursing program. I got:
B+ in Intro to Psych
A in Freshman composition
B+ in A & P I
B+ in A & P II
I feel my grades are good, but because of how competitive it is, I want other peoples opinion, especially people who have gotten accepted into the nursing program whether or not you think I have a good chance of getting accepted!
Thankyou and hope to hear from everyone soon:)
