Is Accelerated too hard if you have a family?

Published

My biggest fear is once I get accepted into an Accelerated BSN, can I cut it? I hear horror stories of people who get in a program a fail out because they failed a second test. Is it two strikes you're out? Can I achieve a BSN in a accelerated program and juggle family life too? Any advice?

I have applied to a few accelerated programs, and I have a small family. From what I understand, an accelerated program is going to be much more time consuming than a full time job, so you will have to have a good support system in place. Since my husband travels a lot for his work, I am going to have to hire a nanny. My daughter is older, almost nine, and she stays pretty busy with her own schoolwork and extracurricular activities. I think as long as you have adequate help, you have a good chance of succeeding.

My friend is a single mom with two elementary school children. She recently graduated from an accelerated program. Although she made it through, she said it was a gruelling 13 months and was hard on her family and she needed a lot of help. She said lots of weekend clinicals and late night paper writing.

I have young children and have come to the conclusion that going for the extra two semesters for traditional is the way to go for me. I don't need that extra stress in my life.

Thanks for the insight. Hopefully, I can find some people who are in or have completed the program to get some further information to ease my anxiety. Luckily, i do have a lot of family support, but I do not handle stress well :(

I did my program with a 2 year-old, and it was not easy at all, but certainly doable. It was intense and required that my husband take a huge portion of the childcare and home care duties. It was good for us because it was 14 months. A traditional program takes longer and would not have worked out.

Congrats! The program I am looking at is 17 months, but still, what an accomplishment! :yeah:

I did an accelerated nursing program with 6 children, including a baby born in middle. It was very hard but doable. You just have to make good use of every minute, and start studying well in advance of any test.
