Irish nurse seeking move to Canada....

Published

Hi,

1st post here....this website is fantastic by the way!

I'm Irish, trained in London, England, where I've been qualified for 3 years, specialising in Gynaecology/ Women's Health, and now have position of Ward Sister/ F Grade.

Have been interested in moving to Canada/ US for a while....however, I think Canada is more appealing.

Can you let me know if NCLEX and Canadian Nursing Exams are similar (I've done 2x 10wk courses in NCLEX prep) and where in Canada would be best to relocate.

Also, are there any Gynaecology nursing specialities in Canada, or is it just under Med/ Surg as in the US.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

My nurse training included Psych/ Children/ PLD (People with Learning Difficulties) and Adult (Med/ Surg). However I chose to work in Gynaecology after I qualified.... but I still have pre- qualification hours for the others. How many hours are required?

You may be okay with your program, but I know for a fact that any nurses who have graduated from the UK over the past few years must make up the other hours. Did your program consist of 18 months of general medical, then 18 months of either adult/mental health/ or peds-maternal? If so, this is the program that is not fully accepted by either Canada or the US without making up additional hours. Did you have clinical as well as theory in the other areas?

Yeah, I did do 18months Child/ Psych/ PLD where I had clinical & theoretical components and then 18months General adult (Med/ Surg). This all seems a bit down-heartening! I suppose I've got ALOT of work to do to get there! Where do I start :uhoh21:

Why don't you narrow you choice down to a couple of provinces and then contact the association for RN's in those provinces?

If you are happiest in Women's Health, you're better off staying in large, urban areas.

The weather might be diabolical on the prairies, but that's why there's Mexico and Hawaii to go to in January when its -40C......:chuckle

Also, be aware that several of the provinces are now actually requiring a BSN for initial licensure............Best suggestion is to check out the provinces that you are considering and contact their equivalent of a Board of Nursing and see what they have to say.

Good luck....................

The NCLEX and CNA exam are different.

I am hoping to go to Ontario, i actually like the hot summers and the snowy cold winters, mad i know.

Just got back from visiting Collingwood, north of Toronto, very nice. Hoping to sit my CRNE exam in October, What about you, have you sat it yet? Does anyone have any advice?

Hope this works, not ever done this sort of thing before.

You may wish to also check out the UK forum as it will have info that will be beneficial to you.

Hi nurseIrish, nurseEnglish here lol. I am also moving to Canada (to Vancouver....I read up on the weather!) and have just got my qualification approved by the RNABC - sitting the CRNE soon then I'm done. I qualified in 1993 as RN here in the UK and my course was fine for the Canadian Authorities. When did you qualify?

Just curious, I am mildly obsessed with Ireland and would like to know, do you work there or reside there currently? What is it like? Sorry to change the subject but I almost considered relocating there at one point. Just curious. Thanks!

I qualified in 2002. I've sent off now for application packs from a few provinces...although I think Vancouver is the best place for me to go. How long has the process took for you, and how did you arrange to sit your exam....what prep did you do? Thanks for the help aswell:-)
