Interview Questions

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Published

Hey Everyone,

It seems like there has been an influx of recent CNA program graduates and passings for the state licensure exam.

I was wondering if there's anyone out there who has recently interviewed or just has a pretty decent idea as to what interviews for this career field are like?

Are questions focused more towards behavior?

What could one expect or prepare for in the interview process?

Thanks for your time and as always your advice is much appreciated :-).

I have an interview at a hospital on Tuesday so I would be very interested in hearing some replies as well. I've worked as a CNA in a LTC facility for 2 years, and I really didn't have to interview for the position since I already worked at the facility in activities, so I've never had an interview like this before. I'm nervous!

Congratulations DancingQueen!

I hope we hear some responses soon.

:)

I had an interview this morning and the questions were pretty straight forward.

I didn't have any previous CNA experience, so when it came to my previous work experience, the questions centered around customer service and managerial positions and how they translate.

Upon arrival I met with the hiring manager who interviewed me.

I was presented with a test, no right or wrong answers, just to collect statistical data and determine what kind of worker I would be (I believe). Some examples of the questions are:

What words would your friends use to describe you?

What words would you use to describe yourself?

Are you motivated best in a team environment or individually?

Afterwards, I began my interview.

Questions:

Previous work experience

Technical questions relating to equipment use - full lifts, transferring residents, bathing

Why do you want to work here?

Scenarios:

Combative residents

Confused residents

The interview lasted for about an hour. I was given the opportunity to ask questions at the end (pretty standard).

I think you will do a great job tomorrow, Dancing Queen.

The interviewer may not ask but be prepared to answer what are your strength and weaknesses. Be sure to mention how you overcame and are dealing with that weakness. Shows your ability to learn and adapt.

Wish I could help more. Still new at this.

I just got done with my interview and I'm not sure how to feel about it. I met and interviewed with the hiring manager, and only him. He asked me questions like:

-Tell me about yourself

-If you knew two nurses didn't like each other and they each came to you to gossip about the other, what would you do?

I replied by saying I will listen to what they have to say but I will stay neutral in the situation and would not talk to other co-workers about the situation.

-If you were walking past a patient room and saw the CNA or nurse had the Hoyer lift hooked up wrong, what would you do?

I said I would nicely tell them to stop the lift and help them correct it because I would want someone to correct me if I made a mistake.

-If you were having a busy day and had all sorts of things to do and then the nurses gave you a bunch of assignments and things to do, how would you handle the situation?

I told him I would look at all of the tasks I was assigned and prioritize them from most important to not as important and try to complete them in that order if possible.

-How are you a safe CNA?

I explained if I had a new patient or resident that I haven't worked with yet, I would make sure to look at the care plan or ask another CNA or nurse how they transfer. I would make sure to use proper body mechanics to keep both the patient and myself safe, and I would always make sure the patient is doing okay while I transfer them.

-If you were offered the position, when could you start?

-On a scale of 1-10 how organized would you say you are?

I felt okay about my answers but at the end of the interview, he said that there us quite a bit of turnover for CNA's since a lot of them switch departments or get their RN and start as a nurse, so if I don't get the job, I should keep looking for openings. That was kind of a discouraging thing to hear :-( It makes me feel like I probably don't have a shot. He told me he would finish interviews this week and HR would let me know next week. I was able to get his business card so I plan on sending a thank you card to maybe make me stand out of the pile. I really want this hospital job!

It sounds like you gave some excellent answers. Don't count yourself out until you hear from HR. Good luck!

I agree, you still have a shot. It's possible he told everyone that at the end of the interview.

It's a great idea to send a letter. Stay positive!

They called today and I was offered the position! I definitely accepted! :-) I am SO excited and thankful for this opportunity! Good luck to everybody else on their job hunts and interviews! :-)

Congratulations Dancing Queen! I hope I'm as lucky as you are! :-)

Let us know what you hear about your interview! I'm crossing my fingers for you!

My second time posting and wanted to add to this thread:

Had an interview today and some of the questions I can remember are:

Tell me about yourself.

What are your strengths?

Tell me a time you saw shortcuts and how did you handle it.

Tell me a time of how you dealt with a frustrated patient.

How are you in a team?

Whats the normal blood pressure range?

Whats the normal temperature range?

What are signs you should look out for in a patient?

Do you know how to read a patients chart?

They asked when could I start.

The interview was for a short term acute care lots of turnover of patients.

I got the position, its my first one since I got my CNA certificate so kinda nervous.

Congratulations on your new job!
