I rarely have time for internet at work, but have used it on occasion.I use it mostly to get my patients information about their illnesses. It's really sad how few patient education materials my hospital provides. I have a few websites that I can visit to get bilingual patient education materials.NIDDK is one of my favorites.
Our interoffice email is now Outlook so I use it for that. We subscribe to a pharmaceutical website, so I use it for that, it has great patient teaching information.
Also whenever I need to look up a strange illness the internet has been quite valuable.
I confess to using it for personal use on my breaks. It's rampant and there doesn't seem to be anything they can do about it. Every now and then we get nasty notes, "Internet is not for personal use" and we all ignore it. :)
Nurses and other health professionals in my workplace have access (once the forms are filled out) to a huge "intranet" which has links to "allowed sites". These are usually all health related and government sites. The network is called the "Clinician's Knowledge Network" (yes it will appear after a google search but you can't get in )
I use it on a frequent basis at work, and as i am a Govt employee can access it from home with my work logon. I have free access to sites like MIM's, Harrison's and Medline not to mention many, many journals.
Email is a staple of my workplace. As someone once said "get it in writing!" At my workplace email is considered "in writing".
I just can't wait till we get the "paperless" workplace! And PC's faster than Pentium 3!

How many nurses out there have internet access at work?
If you do, do you have much of an opportunity to use it and for what purposes.
Just curious.
