Internet and/or cable when traveling..

I was wondering if you more seasoned travelers get cable and/or internet set up every time you change assignments or if you used a mobile hotspot or other portable wifi? I am currently going to school online and need internet wherever I go, also I would like to take my Roku box to watch Netflix and Hulu. I don't watch enough TV really to need cable but would like to stream some shows on occasion. So should I plan on getting cable and internet hooked up every time I relocate or should I look into a mobile hotspot? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks :)

For cable, I use something called sling box, which I set up at the home base and stream recorded tv shows and live tv over the Internet. That saves a lot of money. My husband works from home off the Internet, he also does a lot of research about connection speeds, good deals, and easier way for us to do things while traveling. We have not found a better way then to call Comcast or Verizon every 3 months and have them set it up. We don't put a deposit down which saves some money and its easier if you can get your service transferred from one location to another.

We have iPhones and macs also, I've tried the personal mobile hotspot from my phone to laptop. It works in a pinch, but you can't call and use Internet at the same time, it uses TONS of data, and really isn't fast enough. I tried doing an education power point from the laptop that I needed to do for work, and I used my personal hotspot. The video didn't stream at all. I had to go to panera bread. So I hope this helps a little.

Thank you, I will look into it. Can you use it if someone back at home is watching TV?

Yes, but they will need their own sling box, but you will share the bill for cable, which would make it cheaper for both if you want to share. I've had a couple occurrences where my channel changed unexpectedly, but my husband thinks it has to do with the folks at home not knowing how use it properly and pressing the wrong buttons.

I call and set it up each time. But be very careful that they don't require a contract or any fees. I've learned that if I don't like who I'm speaking to and he or she isn't offering me a good deal ill hang up and call back until I do. Also ask for them to wave the installation fee etc.

i use netflix or hulu

on my first assignment the apt complex had free wifi. on my second one i got a prepay t-mobile hotspot 4g/lte ($180), it works just as fast as a normal wifi connection, costs $25-$50 depending on how much data you want to use (1.5-5G). not the greatest plan for streaming videos but good for daily internet use.

Isn't there a satellite or mobile internet service that you can look into? Like earthlink or something?

I have had it included for the past two years. This time I had to set it up myself. I know BestBuy has some kind of HotSpot Internet services you can buy too as they tried selling it to me last year but I just didn't have the time to look into it this time around.
