Future job prospects for a NZ nursing graduate?

I will be starting my nursing degree programme in July 2006. Can those who are in the profession tell me what they think the job prospects will be like for me when I graduate in 2009? I would like to work in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch. Is there any chance of a nursing surplus happening by then, given NZ's small population, and the number of nursing graduates being churned out every year (around 1000 per year)? I will be a foreign student (male) and wish to stay on and work in NZ. Or do you think a job is virtually guaranteed on graduation? Is there any unofficial positive discrimination for male nurses when applying for jobs?

I don't know about NZ but jobs in the Alice in Central Australia are there in plenty. Come and enjoy the Territory experience

Good luck with your studies. There should be loads of opportunities for you to find work after graduation, however the most difficult part may be finding a place on a New Graduate programme {or Nurse Entry To Practice programme}. These run for about 12 months and give you the chance to consolidate all your learning. Many units in NZ really appreciate a male nurse being on the staff. I have a son in the UK training {graduates AUG 06} and a hubby training in NZ, starting Feb 06, so that will make all 3 of us nurses by Dec 08 !!!

I was checking out the NZ scene last February in Dunedin. I made an inquiry at the local hospital and was told it was probably the only hospital in NZ that didn't need nurses! It's a college town, and turnover is rare. Hope this helps.
