A serious incident occured on my ward on thursday friday evening where 2 hours post admistration of Fluconazole 50mg for oral candida, a patient who had been medically stable for several months suffered one of the worst type of seizures I have ever witnessed in my career, so bad that the call was put out to the crash team. The patient did survive but took over an hour to regain conciousness, and several hours before he verbally responded.

Has anybody anywhere ever witnessed seizures post this anti fungal drug? I cannot count the amount of occasions I have administered this drug and I have definatly not given it the respect I should have. When questioned about this drug i have been almost dismissive of it's potency treating it as nothing more than a 'harmless' medicine used to treat thrush. After discussing this with my fellow RN's at work who have all given the same thought to this medication.

Apparently 25% of users suffer side effects and over 13% suffer from severe headaches. :uhoh21: Which is a rather high ratio of patients.

Love to hear comments on this drug.

it's been a while since I gave this drug and not given it many times but I can say I have never noticed any side effects from the patients I have given it to. Very scarey situation, I'm glad patient was OK
