Hello all,

Some of you may have read some of my posts about how to go about making up the hours for working in the states, I have tried many avenues and had all the doors shut on me so to speak and my uni is not allowing me to do it and other uni's are also saying they don't allow nurse students to make up hours at their uni's :( I feel really upset as i feel this is a huge obstacle in my way, you see i have had my heart set on working abroad in the US for a couple years ever since i was 12! its the hugest dream or goal that i really want to achieve before i grow older (am 23) , and well i just don't know where else to go in order to make up my hours in order to work in the states. Suzanne suggested going to guest classes abroad in the US to make up the hours there but i can't afford the living costs of doing all that :( i feel depressed and pretty low about this obstacle, can anybody suggest anything else i can try please??

which areas of nursing do you need to gain the hours in?

Hi letina , sadly i need 80 hours worth of clinical time in obstetrics, paediatrics and psych nursing, as well as 40 hours worth of theory time in each of those , its quite a lot as my course is heavily adult based and was even in the common foundation part of the course.

So let's get this straight - your training doesn't include any of these specialities? You have another year to go, is there no way you can elect a placement in any of these areas?

Apart from one or two theme days here and there for those subjects, then nope , my course doesnt really do those specialities, as i mentioned it was very heavily adult orientated , and have asked to have placements in those area's but the placement coordinator simply would not allow it :(

How about asking if you can 'sit in' on some of the lectures then ask the tutor to set a couple of assignments for you to submit? That would take care of the theory side and maybe you could do some clinical hours in your own time?

Just a thought as I said but anything's worth a try, you sound so keen and I don't think you should give up without exploring every avenue

yes i did ask some of my tutors if i could do this and they still said no! (unbelievable isnt it!) i am going to try one last time with the head of the department but going by the reactions of the other tutors i will bet its going to be no yet again , yes i am verrry keen, i am so jealous of all these nurses who got to do the general training in the uk lol ...if only i had been born a few years earlier eh! ...i am trying not to give up but some days it does get frustrating...if you here of anything that could help i would love it if you could get in touch and let me know!

Tina, if I think of anything of course I will let you know. Your tutors are being unreasonable, I really feel for you, I hate it when students are not encouraged. Our system here in the UK often leaves much to be desired which is one of the reasons I'm off to the US. Don't be too jealous of us nurses who trained years ago, all my transcripts have been destroyed because they are so old :o which is giving me a lot of sleepless nights at the moment as I am waiting for eligibility to take NCLEX and without my transcripts I may be in the same boat as you :banghead:

Don't give up hope. Remember, the things worth having are worth working for
