Hello all,
Some of you may have read some of my posts about how to go about making up the hours for working in the states, I have tried many avenues and had all the doors shut on me so to speak and my uni is not allowing me to do it and other uni's are also saying they don't allow nurse students to make up hours at their uni's I feel really upset as i feel this is a huge obstacle in my way, you see i have had my heart set on working abroad in the US for a couple years ever since i was 12! its the hugest dream or goal that i really want to achieve before i grow older (am 23) , and well i just don't know where else to go in order to make up my hours in order to work in the states. Suzanne suggested going to guest classes abroad in the US to make up the hours there but i can't afford the living costs of doing all that i feel depressed and pretty low about this obstacle, can anybody suggest anything else i can try please??

Sorry you are finding it difficult to make your hours up. Have you tried any EU universities which may help you with your catch up. The only other thing is to save as much as you can and try what Suzanne suggests. Have you enquired with any US nursing schools?

Why on earth do UK nurses have to make up hours. Seems silly to me. Just curiuos though.

UK nurses are not trained as generalists like American and Canadian nurses. They pick their specialty and their coursework and clinical is focused on that area (midwifery, sick children, adult). Since the US requires nurses to be generalists with training in OB, Psych, Peds and Med-Surg, nurses from the UK have to make up hours in the specialties they didn't study.

Not all nurses only the nurses who trained in the middle/end 90's. I trained the old fashioned way and did all round general training, so I havent had to make up any time.
So take that back Fergus lol

:chuckle I take it back. Only the young, new, fresh nurses have to do it. The more experienced nurses (code word for "older" around here ) get to come without it;).
Seriously though, I think it's a bit of a shame that UK nurses have to choose a specialty so early. I never even considered OB/NICU before I did my school rotations there in my second year of schooling. As a nurse, I've never worked in any other area and never want to! I still don't know why I thought I'd like adult medicine... Sick adults are gross.
Hi there
No I have not tried any EU universities, I would only really be able to do it from british universities, I guess I will have to wait till I am a qualified nurse and then save up money that way as there is no way i can afford to save as a student as all my money goes on my driving lessons and transport costs in between placements as well as books I wish they hadnt changed the training system , I have a suspicion they did so to stop UK nurses leaving to work abroad.

I agree it must be difficult to choose so soon I dont think i would have wanted to do it so feel quite lucky that I had no choice!!

I sometimes wondered that but if you ask them they will deny.
Well best of luck in whatever you do
When do you qualify? There might be more you can access then.
You will want to work in Uk for a while before you head to the states just to gain confidence.
Have you spoken to an agency you dont wanna sign up, but they may have advice that you can access as I am sure they must have faced this before.

Hiya I actually qualify in feb 2006 , as am in my final year of training now and have asked numerous agencies about advice ,all they say is to ask different nursing schools to let me make up the hours there, but i have asked a few schools now and they all refuse to let me do it its my dream to work abroad but all i seem to be getting is brick walls at every turn *sigh*
