International nursing students in the US

Published

For those of you that are studying in the US under either an F-1 visa, or any other where you do not have permission to work, and will need to apply for a green card when you finish your schooling-----this is for you.

You must meet all of the requirements for immigration that a foreign-trained nurse does, the only exception that you have is that the English requirements are waived for you. You still need to submit the application and get a Visa Screen Certificate. This is offered by CGFNS and the application is available on their website, http://www.CGFNS.org. There is only one application available, whether you did your training in the US, or overseas.

You will still need to find an employer that will petition for your green card. You will still need to undergo a physical exam at a physician's office that is approved by USCIS an have verification of all titers and vaccinations. If you do not have verifiable proof of having had chicken pox, etc., you will need to have either a titer drawn, or receive the vaccination. Immigration is very strict now with this, they will no longer go on what you are verbally telling them.

Hope that this helps...............most of you will also be able to get an OPT for one year of training while your documents are being processed, but you can only receive the OPT once, especially if this is now a second career for you, and you already used your OPT status for the other.

If you are coming to the US just for the MSN, and already have a BSN from overseas, you will be required to write the English exams. You are only exempt from them if this is your initial training as a nurse, meaning ADN or BSN only.

You can not apply for H1B that is up to the employer

The employer might sponsor me.

The employer has to sponsor you and provide all the documentation that is required for the application, afterwards it is up USCIS to prove the visa.

H1b is employment driven and must be applied for by the employer. THey must also provide certain documents to meet requirements

Can I contact your attorney who did your h1b?

Thanks

Sorry to say, but there are very very little chances for h1b, my OPT expires in a couple weeks, I am a BSN, i have tried everything, I found a company who would sponsor, but its the immigration who doesn't give the visa easily, I have talked to many smart people and h1b visa really not the choice of staying in the country. I am hanging in the air and very upset about a whole thing, I have a great job that sadly I will have to leave due to the gaps in the immigration system. Good luck!

Palme, I am also in my last year of the BSN program and I am going to apply for OPT in the following year. It is getting harder to find jobs for even OPT now. Can I ask what job you did for your OPT and in what state?

Thank you!

Hi everyone,

I am a F1 student in the nursing program at BMCC in NYC.I'm supposed to graduate with an associate degree in June 2013. After that I want to get into a BSN program, but the problem is that they want you to be a RN nurse in order to get in.So the question is:

1. Can you take NCLEX if you are on F1?(NY state?)

2. If yes,how long it takes since graduation to get the paperwork done and get the license?

3.Can you apply to college(CUNY) before you get the license and if possible to get it before starting the clinicals?

My concern is that I'll have only three months before starting the new school and if I don't get the RN license I won't be able to start the BSN program and I might run out of F1 status.

Maybe someone had a similar experience and has some suggestions...

Thank you!

Many have taken NCLEX on a F1

You will not get permission to sit NCLEX until you have graduated and the NY BON assesses your application and receive your transcripts. Time will depend on your school sending in required documentation

You will need to ask the college about applying before you have a license issued (as long as you meet requirements and pass NCLEX)

My concern is that the people from the nursing department at our school told us a couple of times that if we don't have a valid SSN we can't take the NCLEX.I looked at the forms for NCLEX and it says "if don't have SSN leave it blank",it also has a section were you have to put yor non-immigration visa type. I will go in the fall and talk with the nursing department at our school because I'm really confused.

I would suggest you talk to the BON, although it was a few years ago I received a license from NY with no SSN and I lived in the UK at that time.

Thank you Silverdragon102!

Do you know by any chance what's the best way to request info from them?

Thank you very much!

@ Zaika

Honestly, if you re graduating in 2013 , its too early to even bother)) for 2 years things can change a lot, just like your status...

Anyways, Im still an F1 (but i do have ssn) and I graduated from BMCC last spring, then I applied for OPT and took and passed NCLEX. Since Spring '11 im working on my BSN, so dont worry even if things wont change until then you should be able to sit for NCLEX

G luck with he program !!!- for me it wasn't the best experience, unfortunately..
