For those of you that are studying in the US under either an F-1 visa, or any other where you do not have permission to work, and will need to apply for a green card when you finish your schooling-----this is for you.
You must meet all of the requirements for immigration that a foreign-trained nurse does, the only exception that you have is that the English requirements are waived for you. You still need to submit the application and get a Visa Screen Certificate. This is offered by CGFNS and the application is available on their website, http://www.CGFNS.org. There is only one application available, whether you did your training in the US, or overseas.
You will still need to find an employer that will petition for your green card. You will still need to undergo a physical exam at a physician's office that is approved by USCIS an have verification of all titers and vaccinations. If you do not have verifiable proof of having had chicken pox, etc., you will need to have either a titer drawn, or receive the vaccination. Immigration is very strict now with this, they will no longer go on what you are verbally telling them.
Hope that this helps...............most of you will also be able to get an OPT for one year of training while your documents are being processed, but you can only receive the OPT once, especially if this is now a second career for you, and you already used your OPT status for the other.
If you are coming to the US just for the MSN, and already have a BSN from overseas, you will be required to write the English exams. You are only exempt from them if this is your initial training as a nurse, meaning ADN or BSN only.
hello suzzane4, im new here, and i am very much thankful that a person like you is very patient to answer very important question,,I also wanna ask you on some very important details on NY application...
1. when will i submit the form 1 for BON NY, should i wait until my CVS for NY be completed or should I send them at same time, to CG and NY BON?
2. about the online application , I read alot of things about it, but iwas able to sign up online, will I have a problem in the future if i send the paper application?
3.about the H.S diploma not in english, who will be the one to translate it , can anybody do it except me?
4. and last... ssshhh finally.im a second courser,, can i just ask for my transcript from my first course or do i really have to get also a copy of Diploma?
thANK you so much .... and sorry for this redundant question but i'll be very happy to hear from you...:roll
You can send the three applications at the same time. Including the Visa Screen application, if you can afford it.
I do not like the on-line application system, my suggestion is to send a completed paper one when you send in the required paperwork.
If you graduated more than 10 years ago form HS, then you do not need to submit it, if less than that, it needs to be a copy that has been translated by a certified translator, same for all documents that need translation.
If it asks for a Diploma, then they want a Diploma. Give them everything that they ask for, or it will give you grief.
Hi Suzanne!
I just graduated from an American college (RN degree, F-1 visa). I'm currently looking for an employer that would sponsor me for a green card and I'm studying for NCLEX.
I read here about Visa screen certificates and I went to the site and I started an online application. I got stuck when it asked me for proof of English proficiency - am I exempt from in as an American school graduate? I did take TOEFL before admission (more than 3 years ago); do I have to take it again? If I don't have to take it, do I leave that field blank?
Also, in the licensure section, I put information about my LPN license (which I took recently), becaue I didn't take NCLEX-RN yet. Was it a right thing to do, or should I wait to get my RN license and then fill out that application.
Thanks a lot!
The same thing happened to me but I did mail them an application along with the fee and ask the school to send a transcript. I didn't send any of my previous TOEFL / degree / secondary school details since we are exempted from educational review....hope they don't ask for that.
Did your state board require background check before test?
I'm applying in NY - I don't know anything about a background check - how do you do that?
Do you have to request transcripts from all your schools (in my case, I went to secondary and one postsecondary school abroad, then I went to a nursing school in NY). Getting a transcript from the U.S. will be easy, but getting one from abroad, will be very difficlult!

Zinaa, you do not need any of the english exams. Just leave that field blank.
Have you not done background checks while in school?

I am applying for the NJ license and they need background check and finger printing before we sit for our test; there is agency does this thru state board for a fee. I think in NY the employer does this before they hire you, if it is not mandated as part of license. I think for visa screen just need your bsn/ assoc transcript. no need for toefl info.
Did anyone know any hospitals who is presently sponsoring in New York city area? I reached couple of major ones known to me and they are not sponsoring at the moment.

A VSC will not be issued unitl you pass the NCLEX-RN exam, that is the requirement. You are exempt from the English exams for the VSC if you did your training in the US.
I do not ever recommend the on-line application, only the old-fashioned paper one.

I would get it taken care of now, or you will have issues later on with it.
You could get thru school and get possilbe get licensed as an rN, but you would not be able to get a green card. Not sure how old that you are, but if you are just college age, your best bet is to get it taken care of now. Do not worry aobut getting grandfathered in, you are out of status, and that won''t get you a green card later on.
I suggest that you speak with an immigration attorney as soon as possible, and get this taken care of. It will look more favorable on you to take care of it now. And it is not an issue now for it to be taken care of and you made "legal", provided that you came to the US on a legal visa.
