So I'm not a school nurse but I do adolescent psych and see a lot of head lice. To me it's funny to see the horror the mere thought of these normal human flora causes in nurses who could stand down a 200 pound psychotic without batting an eye.
So anyway I was getting ready to discharge a patient when the parent called and asked that the patient be checked for lice before leaving the hospital. I explained that all patients are checked for lice when they are admitted and treated. If the patient had not been treated then no lice had been found.
The parent went on to say they had spent thousands of dollars trying to eradicate lice from their home even saying they had an account at some special salon that did nothing but treat head lice.
So I did a little research and found out that there is a whole cottage industry that has grown up around the eradication of these critters. My Favorite has a tag line "No One Should have To Go Through This alone!"

Just thought this was so funny

Oh yea. BIG money in lice. The camp I work for pays LTC to come and head check and treat any cases twice a summer. It's about 8-10 pickers for 700 kids. I don't even know what they charge the parents or the camp but they all seem pretty happy to be traveling several hours round trip to look at heads.

Sometimes I wish I would have thought of the concept. The 2 in my town make big bucks. I have had a couple families use them - they have told me they spent $600-$1000 for the service.

Yup, there is a salon near me that charges $250, and they also offer classes to certify people as "nit pickers". I have a couple friends who are SAHM who do this as a job. They charge $100/hour.

Ugh! I loathe the "Lice Doctors". The ones around here claim that they can pinpoint the day your dear child was "infected", ummm No, Brittany the wedding photographer, you cannot. I call bull...
^This was an actual phone call that I received. Mom insisted that "the lice doctor" told her that her dear child caught head lice on Monday, it was currently Wednesday. Mom sent in the propaganda from said "doctor" and the person's business card...Brittany's wedding photography. Just no:no:

i have seriously thought about starting a franchise of my own. pssh... i don't mind combing through a head while making bank. it may be my retirement plan. The only thing holding me back is it's all just so unethical.
The last parent that used them called me up quoting them... it took all i could not to scream in the phone that they are profiting over the spread of lice so so they are going to tell you ridiculous things.
