Interested in Nursing

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi I am interested in becoming a nurse, but have a few reservations. I currently work in business make good money 80K in NY, but feel a void in my life as I want to help humanity and not just my boss' pockets. My concern is salary, do I really want to get into school debt to come out making around the same salary or less :/ this dilemma has me concerned + not to mention I am 35 and been out of school for a long time. Can someone please give me advise on salaries for starting nurses in NY? how long does it take to advance up the ladder?

Currently I work 50 hours per week and sometimes work on weekends, so nursing hours will not differ much except I hope to work less days

Thanks in advance for all your comments!

You're probably going to be making the ten percentile or less amount starting out as many nurses have been nurses for quite some time.

If you're doing this because you're feeling rather empty and want to help humanity, there is another way. Keep your well paid job, especially if it has prospects, and volunteer with any one of the wonderful charities that desperately need help. You can also donate money to help them do their work. I don't think becoming a nurse will help, especially as it's all about the corporate bottomline these days.

I'd just add that if your plan is to move up the corporate ladder and work less days, then you might not like some of the nitty-gritty of nursing, including dealing with bodily fluids. I would consider shadowing a nurse, before you quit your job and investing time and money into a new career.

Nursing is not just for the bored or for the "I want to try something else." If I were you, I would look more into nursing, go volunteer at hospital and see what healthcare is like before jumping on bored to help "humanity" and fill in that empty void of yours. Oh btw, just because your work hours may be less than 50 hours as a nurse compared to your current job, doesn't mean it'll be any easier. There is a reason why we work 36 hours (for bedside nursing and a few other positions)
