interested in becoming a LPN

Hi all. I am interested in becoming an LPN. I have been in the medical field for 9 yrs doing medical billing. I love to work with patients so I figured why not try becoming an LPN. PLease help me understand what is needed to become one. Do you take the LPN class and become certified? Or do you have to normally go through yrs of schooling. Im 30 so yrs of schooling is out. Please someone let me know. That would be great. Thanks in advance ;):lol2:

LPNs are not certified. LPNs have state-mandated nursing licensure, which is far more effectual than certification. We're called "licensed practical nurses" because we have a license that we must maintain.

You can go to a community college to become an LPN, which typically takes about 18 months after all of the prerequisite classes have been satisfactorily completed. The community college route is significantly cheaper, but takes longer.

You can also attend a private technical school to become an LPN, which typically takes about 12 months with no waiting lists or prerequisite classes. I took this route, and it was very expensive. However, I paid for the convenience of avoiding waiting lists and prerequisites.

I did a community college program that was 12 months plus a semester or two of pre-reqs. Many of us weren't real young so don't let that stop you. Good luck!

Don't let age stop you, I am 31 yrs. old and I will be attending LVN Nursing School in Fall 2008 or Fall 2009 at my local CC. You can also do the private school LVN program, there are no pre-reques or wait lists but they are expensive but you should choose whatever works for you, I hope that everything works out for you, keep us posted

at 40 I went to a local tech school for 12 months and paid less than 4k. I'm at the community college for 2 years of prereq's and the LPN to RN transition program and may continue to go all the way to a master's for ARNP.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!
