Instructors deciding our fate??

Nursing Students General Students

Do you ever feel like your instructors spend a lot of their time deciding which of us *deserves* to complete the nursing program and giving the rest a hard time until they quit?

How do they decide who deserves it?? How do I prove that I am eager to learn and I can take all the challenges they throw my way, but I'm not a mind reader?!

Can't we all just get along? :)

I dont know, yes our fate is in our own hands but there ARE instructors who seem to enjoy watching students squirm/struggle/fail. To me it makes me want to work harder to prove them wrong. You have to be in control of your own destiny.

The instructors need to be a mentor not an adversary. Learning is a two way street and if you aren't getting back as much as you are putting in, say something. They may be your instructor but its not like grade school, you're both adults and you should say something. maybe its just a misunderstanding or a skewed perception?

I agree that we are all essentially responsible for where we land. But I do wonder if some instructors are more likely to go out of their way for certain students who may be struggling. If you're passing then you generally don't have to worry so much about your instructors interference. But if you're not passing, then I think your instructors perspective of you as a student [or even personally] will impact your final grade. So yes, an instructor could impact our fate.

To Gina1982.....Did you seek help from other instructors? Why did this instructor come after you like this? Such a horribly sad story. So sorry.

There are always two sides to every story. As an instructor, I have seen both sides. There are, unfortunately, instructors who are cruel. There are also students who are not ready to be a nurse, and they sometimes blame the instructor. For example, I have seen students fail every exam while the majority of other students are succeeding, yet still say the instructor was "targeting" them. I have also seen unsafe students who claimed the same thing, yet the instructors have documented a pattern.

One option might be to ask others who have had you in clinical before for an objective take on your performance. I would also ask the instructor you are having difficulty with. You can only control your own performance, and report any unfair treatment.

I first want to state, not all instructors are the same. There are some that will bend over backwards to help the struggling student, that is putting in 110% effort, to help them succeed. There are others that seem to like to weed out the weak, at all costs. I do compare it to hazing.

Hold strong!!! Find a support system, a buddy a semester ahead of you, perhaps some recent grands that can offer support, cheer you on & hold your hand if need be!!!
