Instructor asking for students to withdraw

Published

Ok...I saw it coming. A few weeks ago, the instructor gave a very to the point speech about the lack of commitment of some of the students. I agree...we take our tests online, and there is a report that we can run that shows our grade as well as a "class average" grade. Well, most of the class averages thus far (5 weeks into program) are below 50%! Even on open-book test....come on folks...REALLY!!! Anyway, we have a test today, and all week she's been saying...study this info...well yesterday she gave 3 pop-quizzes...I got GREAT grades on all (not bragging...just trying to tell the story)...anyway, others didn't do so well. The instructor again gave an even more to the point speech and was furious at the laziness of some of the students. She said a lot of the grades were terrible, and that she would be requesting that some people withdraw from the program by the end of the week. So, I guess our class is about to get smaller...by how much, I don't know. Anyway, a bunch of people were saying "are you worried"...I said NOPE...I know I've been doing what I'm supposed to do, and my grades are REALLY good because of that. Honestly, I'm glad to see it, because the "slackers" are not there for the right reasons (you can tell), and they are just taking valuable time from those of us that want to be there....is it wrong for me to be semi-happy about this? I mean, I'm sorry for their situations, but if they've failed every test this far, then obviously they don't really want this...right? What's your ":twocents:" on the issue? Thanks!

I wish we could have a more hard a$$ approach to our students lacking commitment. Atleast one of them is practically dragged along with or without his consent. I just wish that they would stop wasting time trying to help those who are clearly not serious, and instead spend more time helping those who actually DO struggle and try their very very hardest. Nothing sucks more than busting butt to study and try your best and then feeling like freebies are given to keep the slackers from failing. I was really looking forward to getting rid of some of the baggage in our class, but we've only lost one, where last year they had lost half the class at this point.

They may resent your happiness and/or interpret any remarks you make as "gloating." You'll need to maintain good relationships with ALL of your classmates if you want to thrive throughout the rest of your program. So, be careful about alienating them with your behavior and comments in what for many of them is a stressful and sad time.

Good luck with the rest of your nursing studies.

Exactly! Never step on the toes that might be attached to the butt you have to kiss one day!

Personally I would rather see the program suggest withdrawing rather than just letting people who they know have no chance of passing continue on and get a F on their permanent college transcript!

Our instructor made a similar speech not too long ago but her main point was if your not serious about studying then it's costing you alot of money each day your in class

I agree with this. If they want to be generous they can indicate "withdraw-passing" so that the person remains in good standing to facilitate them being able to enter another school. Good tradeoff, I think, for the person who is willing to take the instructor's suggestion.

I agree with your statements. You should be happy that people are not going to be allowed into a career that they don't care about. There are some people I wish would be weeded out of my program, not because their grades are bad, but because they don't care. Somehow, they care enough to get passing grades though...

It seems that you are very passionate about nursing and these people are not. It is your instructors responsibility to educate effective and high-quality nurses, so naturally those who don't meet the "grade" get "cut".

That's how it should be.
