My name is DonnaLee. I live in the Bronx. I recently moved bk to NY from NC. I am currently pregnant & due to have my son in July. I have been interested in nursing since childhood, but I kind of ventured into computers instead. I currently hold an AAS in Information Systems which is really doing me no good. It is so hard finding an IT job with an associate degree & no experience.
Anyway with my baby coming I have to get into something more promising & something that I know I will enjoy. I haven't really sent any applications out as yet since most are $70 and I want to mke sure I spend my money wisely.:chuckle I have been looking into Beth Israel, BMCC, BCC & Manhattan Adult Learning Center.
I would like to know what are the procedures in getting into a nursing program & which schools are the least expensive, even though I am applying for financial aid. Any advice or suggestions? Also anyone with more info on the Manhattan Adult Learning Center, please let me know what are their procedure & requirements on getting into their LPN program.

Hi there -
I can only speak to you about BMCC.
Basically, your acceptance to their nursing program is dependent on your grades for the following 4 courses. Math 104, Eng 101, A&P I and Psy 101.
You essentially need to get A's in those 4 classes in order to be accepted. The cut-off for admission is usually in the ballpark of 3.8 or something. So if you have taken any of those classes already and you got anything lower than an A, then DO NOT transfer those credits again. just take them over again at BMCC and make sure you get A's. Also, don't overload yourself with classes - - go slowly to ensure you get A's. Anything less than an A jeopardizes your acceptance big time! GOOD LUCK!

you can try with CUNY community colleges which you can obtain associate degree in nursing. they are the most inexpensive ones compare to other colleges in nyc. but i have to warn you that its very competitive to get in to the program due to the limited seats available per semester. therefore, you must try to A's all pre-clinical classes. most community college require minimum of 2.75 gpa to apply to get in nursing program.
some CUNY community colleges:
BMCC
kingsborough community college
queensborough community college
la guardia community college
bronx community college
hostos community college
nyc college of technology
4 years nursing colleges:
york college
hunter college
medgar evers college
lehman college
college of staten island
you may get the enrollment application from any of the colleges above. i think the application fee is $50 and $70 for transfer application. you can choose up to 4 schools listed above in one application. Financial Aids is available for all those cuny colleges depending on you income. note, you also need to get your transcripts from all the colleges you have attended send to cuny application processing center. all the detail procedures are written on the application.
Goodluck to whichever school you are going to apply. and congrats to your baby. I hope you have a easy labor and a healthy baby. Hehe.. I am also pregnant with my first baby and my baby is due on August. I plan to go back to school for nursing on Janaury. It's because I want to stay home and take care of my baby for at least 3 months. It's hard to part with you newborn baby! That's what I think. Again, goodluck with researching for colleges and take care.
Thanks for the info Homiebear. Now let me make sure that I understand u clearly....I can apply to upto 4 colleges using 1 cuny application instead of sending out 4 individual applications? Am I understanding u correctly?
Congrats on ur little bundle of joy. Are u having a boy or girl? Good luck.

You will get accepted to any CUNY college you apply to if you are beginning with the pre-clinicals. While you are completing the prerequisite pre-clinical courses mentioned above, you will then be applying for "nursing candidacy". Acceptance into the CUNY nursing programs will be contingent on your GPA for the four prerequisites. I know at BMCC, LaGuardia and Queensborough there are approximately 50 seats and about 250 people competing for those seats per CUNY location. This is because of the low cost of tuition.
The private schools have a combination of different requirements and often have an admission exam which are part of the application process. Because of the higher cost of tuition, there seems to be more flexibility in admissions.
I have been attending LaGuardia for the prerequisites and co-requisites. I took admission exams for Beth Israel and St. Vincent's. I was accepted to both Beth Israel and St. Vincent's. I'm starting with St. Vincent's in the Fall. The GPA at LaGuardia for entrance into the nursing program was 3.75 last semester. They will be sending out their acceptance letters in a few weeks, but I doubt I would have been accepted because my GPA was less than 3.75.
I'm excited about starting with St. Vincent's in September.
The overall nursing school admissions process was stressful.
Keep in mind with LPN programs that they are only one semester less than an RN program (which pays significantly higher).
Invest the $70.00 CUNY application fee and start taking pre-requisites.
I took all of my pre-requisites and co-requisites part-time while working. When I start in the Fall, I will only have nursing courses and will only need to attend school 2 days per week.
Good luck.
hi DonnaLee,
yes, you can apply up to 4 cuny college in one application. You may indicate your 1st choice, 2nd choice, 3rd choice, and 4th choice. If your first choice school doesnt accept you, you have 2nd, 3rd, and 4th as your backup schools.
Before you apply for the admission, check if those schools accept your credits from your former school. Whether you are able to get into nursing program depends on your gpa for the 4 pre-clinical classes. Most pre-clinical classes for those cuny school I listed above are: English Composition I, Intro to Psychology, Anatomy & Physiology, intro to sociology, bio-chemistry. I know some Cuny colleges do not let you re-take pre-clinical classes. Let say if you took English Comp I in other college before and got A.. then you are good. If you got an F, most likely they will tell you that you cannot persue for nursing program in their school, since you cannot retake that class and they do not take F.
As for my little angel, he is a boy. The down side is that, I am getting overweight. I am a little worry about having a difficult labor. Well, thanks for your concern. Feel free to ask me anything. It's funny, I feel like I can relate to you. Like how we both having a baby and they are coming to this world very soon.. oh and we both want to become nurses. Anyway, goodluck and dont stress over school right now because you need lot of rest and stay positive and happy. Drink lot of water to cool you down from the heat. It's getting mega hot in nyc these days. Take care.

Hi homibear and dlab24
I would like to to congratulate you on the upcoming birth of your little ones.
I just gave birth to my son last week on the 20th of june and let me tell I am so overjoyed I cant stop looking at him, holding him, everything. Now moe than ever I have to get back into school to complete my pre-req for nursing . I too already have an associates degree and I work for a dead end job at an insurance company . Need I say more . Once again congrats .
congrats neb4882 for your newborn son!! I can't wait for my turn.. only 8 more weeks left. ahh.. the anticipation is killing me, lol. I'm so impatient. time passed by really fast from 2nd month - 7 months.. I don't know if it's just me or what.. the time seems to stop now. I wish it could go a little more faster so my son arrive to this wonderful world too! how was your labor? did you take any medication? and how heavy was your little angel when he came out? I hope you get to spend lot of precious time with your son before you go back to school for pre-clinical courses. goodluck.
They always say the last month is the slowest , which is true . I was overdue by a week and I had enough . Ijust wanted him to be here already. Labor wasnt pleasant, I was induced because I was overdue, and things gradually turned for the worse when the level of pain kick in. I was given an epidual , but for some reason it didnt work for me > I was so tired, restless , everything, and I also felt everything, so much pressure and pain. On top of being in labor for 12 hrs no joke , the decion was made to have an c section due to still being stuck at 5cm . I was scared about the surgery , but when it was all said and done and I heard that first cry , oh man I just broke down into tears to finally have him here and no pain(lol). However I want to scare you, this was just my experience . Being in the hospital gave me an insight of the good and bad side of nursing. I dealt with professional nurses and then I had this one nurse who was not so pleasant , I dont think I could use curse words , but my choice of word to describe her wouldnt be to nice. Overall my time in the hospital was fun though . Now I am just starting to take things in and learn as I go as being a new mommy. Once again congrats and please do update me when you give birth to your son.
